Somerford Keynes to Bristol is less than 40 miles, so could be covered in a two day walk, sleeping in a barn (or something) overnight. He could, of course, gone by cart/carriage/whatever if he could afford to pay, or happened to get lucky and somebody was going there, anyway. A horse and cart don't travel that much faster than a man on foot, though. > Everyone seems to have read my email incorrectly I admit to not reading you initial query, so missed to context in which various observations were made. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" Every single one of us Devil Inside - INXS

    2. Avril
    3. Can someone help decipher land assessments 1767-1832. In Banwell at the end of the yearly assessments, there is another form of entry called "Redeemed and Exonerated" with a list of landowners for part of their assessments. What does Redeemed and Exonerated mean with regard to the land assessments? Thanks for any help, Avril

    3. 1. He could have walked. 30 miles is nothing even on the roads of the day. 2. Somerford Keynes is only 3 or 4 miles from Cirencester. There is a more or less direct road from there to Bristol. Doubtless there would have been carriers carts possibly even stage coaches to Bristol or points in between. My money is on walking. 1. Re: [ENG-SOM] JAMES EMMS c 1790
    2. I did a quick search on Free Parish Registers, and there are a few Emms in the Parish of Easton in Gordano which is south west of Bristol, and one Emms in Bath. There was no record of a James Emms though. The website is _http://www.freereg.org.uk/_ (http://www.freereg.org.uk/) . This is not definitive but is a start. There is a village called Whiteway, just south west of Bath. Hope this helps Sarah Baddeley Taunton I am looking for a place and year of birth for JAMES EMMS who was a soldier in the 39th Regiment of Foot from c 1818-1832 when he took his discharge in Sydney Australia.

    3. No need to tell me what Australia is like. I was born here and have travelled and lived in lots of places here. When my ancestor came here in 1809 there were no roads either and in the part where he was there were no corcodiles either ( and still aren't ... Well not the ones who live in the water) Marie in Sydney

I believe an ancestor of mine may have been born in Somerford Keynes in Gloucestershire. I know he came here on a whaling ship from Bristol. Some years ago I was told it would be too far for him to travel from Somerford Keynes in Gloucestershire to Bristol to board the vessel. He arrived in Sydney Australia in February 1809. I am not entirely sure if the one born in Somerford Keynes is my Ancestor. His name was Daniel Clark and was born on 6th July 1784. Hois parents names were William and Mary Clark (nee Ancock) and they married in a place named Corse on 3rd March 1782. My Ancestor was also nmaed Daniel Clark and all we have to go on is his Death Certificate upon which his grandson was the informant. All that says his is he was born in Bristol and his parents were Robert and Mary Ann Clark and judging by the age given on the Death certificate he would have been born in 1786. This is stabbing in the dark I know but I would like to find his actual DOB and Parents. Best Wishes from Marie in Sydney -------------------------------
