I have the following: James Walden Trott born 1810, Lambrook; Harriet (Carler/Carter? father Thomas as per death register in New York)born 1803, Stowey; Julia born 1838, Chard; Robert C. born 1840 Martock, Lavina born 1841 Martock; Thirra (spelling?) born 1846 Chard. My gggrandmother Theresa was born in 1851 but I do not know where. Roseanna is listed in 1841 census born 1836. I have Harriet, Theresa and Rose on a ships list August 1869 coming to New York from Liverpool, England & Queenstown, Ireland. I have not been able to find them on the 1861 census. Perhaps they were on the move to come to N. Am. I have a photo of a lady believed to be Harriet Trott by a London company. I have contacted a collector of the Parisian Photographic Co. photos and he replied that they company operated from 1864 to 1869 at 1 Orchard Street, Portman Square which is listed on the photo. I have found Robert C. in Canada with children born in England, and Julia (Llewellyn) with children born in England, Lavina (Stone)with children born in England, Rose(Bowers) in New York and Ontario Canada That pretty well sums up my total knowledge. Lists of microfilms for each parish can be seen by searching the Library Catalogue at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp As mentioned, some parish registers have been transcribed online eg. Martock, but not alway for all time periods. Increasing numbers of register entries are available through http://www.freereg.org.uk/ Registers are also available at http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ but you would probably need to pay a researcher to look at these. For "Stowey" there are parishes named Overstowey and Netherstowey. I have done all my researching from here in Australia through the LDS Family History Centre microfilms and would personally recommend it if you are able: nothing quite beats seeing the actual register yourself. Author: ELLinSpain Surnames: Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.som.general/12926.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello (1) Registration was required from Sept 1837 however, it was not mandatory till about 1876 (2)You have to look at a few census on "where born" as these can vary greatly and, oftentimes, people tend to remember where they were raised rather than where they were actually born (so, keep an open mind!) (3) Parish Registers - depending on if they survived are a mixed bag, depending on the writer - some were excellent in their detail others, left a great deal to be desired. Usually best to do a "google" for "Parish BMD" then add where. If you have quite a few in one particular place or county, it may be worth your while purchasing a CD (4)Pre 1837 in Parish registers after (hopefully) in the GRO (General Registers Office) available to buy at a cost equiv to £7 (English pounds) inclusive of worldwide postage If you give a list of names & dates, I'll have a peek for you Regards Ell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Charani, Thankyou for your reply. I have checked the census reciords again and he also listed HATCH as his place of birth which I believe is very close to if not part of BEAUCHAMPS. > If he was born c1808, you won't find a birth registration for him. The > best you can > do is a baptismal record which could have happened any time from the Yes it was parish registers that were checked for me. I had also considered the other alternatives you raised, and I do realise that one of them may well be the case, but his wife was a cousin to the wives of the well known DICKSEE family of artists. He would have married well above him. Thankyou again Robyn in Australia

    1. [ENG-SOM] ABBOTT of BEAUCHAMPS?
    2. Robyn Gross
    3. I am trying to find out more about my ABBOTT ancestors. My greatgrandfather was WILLIAM JAMES ABBOTT b 1852 in Hampstead, one of 11 children of JAMES/THOMAS ABBOTT b c1808 -1898 and ANN BARNARDc1818-1880 JAMES/THOMAS ABBOTT used both forenames in different census's. In all censuses he stated that he was born in BEAUCHAMPS SOMERSET. SKS has already checked the BEAUCHAMPS records for me without being able to find a birth registration for him. To assist I will provide his childrens names in birth order as the naming pattern may help identifying his parents. ANN, EMMA, ELLEN, ELIZA, JEANETTE, WILLIAM, ELLEN, HENRY, ALFRED, GEORGE, JESSIE. In all censuses his occupation was gardener. Any information would be appreciated. Robyn in Australia

Civil registration didn't start until 1 July 1837. The best you can do is a baptismal record which could have happened any time from the day he was born to the day he died. He may have believed he was from Beauchamp (Shepton Beauchamp?) but he may have moved there with his family as a small child and not known he was actually born somewhere else: maybe a neighbouring parish, maybe further away, eg in a different county! There's also the possibility that he was a foundling who was taken in by the ABBOTT family and raised as their own. He could have been illegitimate so be in the baptismal registers under his mother's name but took her husband's name when she married - and she may not have married his father. I have a similar problem in trying to find my great grandfather in law's parents which is complicated by the fact that he and the truth were merely passing acquaintances, if not outright strangers :)) > To assist I will provide his childrens names in birth order as the > naming pattern may help identifying his parents. ANN, EMMA, ELLEN, > ELIZA, JEANETTE, WILLIAM, ELLEN, HENRY, ALFRED, GEORGE, JESSIE. Naming patterns don't necessarily mean anything. Some families followed them, others didn't, whilst others only partially did. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

My sincere thanks go to Lynne Faulkner, who transcribed the first part of the register, and checked the whole thing once I had transcribed the rest, and checked Lyn's transcription. We are looking for others who would be willing to transcribe one or more of the other registers for Radstock from microfiche. Note: The website belongs to the parish itself. Dennis White
