    1. Re: [ENG-SOM] HENSON, Nathaniel, Mary, Clara (actually HEWSON!)
    2. Ruth Ann Baker
    3. Earlier this week I posted a message about this family. Helpful replies both on and off list gave some import clues that are being followed up. Ended up they were not from Somersetshire. It appears that Clarey Ann HOUSTON who was married in Illinois in 1865 to Richard PAUL of Somersetshire was actually Clarissa Ann HEWSON, with birth registered in March 1847 in Wisbech registration district (Cambridgeshire). Further her parents appear to be Nathaniel HEWSON and Marianne BURTON married in Holbeach registration district (Lincolnshire) in September quarter 1846. The family seems to be the one on the 1850 census in Williamsburg, Kings County, New York with Nathaniel HEWSON, 27, ship caulker, born in England; Mary A. HEWSON, 25, born in England; Clarissa HEWSON, 3, born in England; and William HEWSON, 1, born in New York. Have not located Clarissa (Clara Ann) on the 1860 census nor her parents. Do have her on the 1870 census after she married. Nor can I find the parents on the 1870 census. Cannot find her brother William on any census after 1850. The 1880 census has a family that looks like her parents and younger siblings and indicates they likely moved from New York to Illinois by 1856. Nathaiel HEWSON, age 56, born in England; Mary Ann HEWSON, 56, born in England with four children ages 24 to 16 all born in Illinois. They are in Kankakee County, which is just south of the county in Illinois where Richard PAUL lived with his parents and siblings. Also helpful was the comment "HEWSON could easily be misheard as HOUSTON and misread as HENSON". Looking more closely at all the old handwriting this appears to be a definite likelihood. Have also found alternate spellings of HEWSON as Heuson, Van Heusen, Huson, and Hughson. Thanks so much Maggie and Celia for your help. 1. [ENG-SOM] Baptism Samuel WHITE or Marriage James WHITE
    2. Deborah
    3. Hi List, Having just subscribed I am trying to find the baptism of a Samuel WHITE who was born according to census records in Bath around 1815. I know his fathers name was James but that is about all I'm afraid. The family moved to London, I presume looking for work but haven't been able to trace them together on the 1841 census to get the Mothers name. If SKS has access to Baths records could they possibly do a lookup to see if there is a baptism there around this time or whether they could find a marriage of a James WHITE about 5 years earlier approx 1810, i.e.going on the fact that Samuel might not be the first son as he is not named after his father. Many thanks in anticipation Debbie

    1. Re: [ENG-SOM] HENSON, Nathaniel, Mary, Clara
    2. Maggie Syrett
    3. If Clara emigrated to America in 1849 or 1850, you will not find her on any census in England. She wasn't born in 1841 and they were in America by 1851. There are 2 people with the name Nathanael HENSON in the whole of England in 1841. It is very unlikely that either of them are yours because they would have been about 70 in 1851! There are 5 people with the name Nathan HANSON in England in 1841. One is already married and one is too young, so that leaves 3 who could possibly be yours. There are 0 people with the name Nathan HENSON. As for Mary BURTON. She probably wasn't married in 1841. There are over 800 people with the name Mary BURTON in just about every county in England, about 20 of them in Somerset, thought they didn't have to come from Somerset at all. Do you know if Nathaniel and Mary had any other children before Mary? That would help to know when they were married and would help narrow the search. There are no people called Nathanael HENSON at Free BMD. You would need to try over and over with different name variants. Kind regards, Maggie On Jun 19, 2008, at 7:35 AM, Ruth Ann Baker wrote: Information we have is limited. Originally we thought her maiden name was Clarey Ann HOUSTON, from the record of her marriage to Richard PAUL in 1865 in Illinois. The name Houston was written in (added) on the original, perhaps because writing of name was hard to read. Richard PAUL came from Isle Abbotts, Somersetshire, England with his parents and nine siblings in December of 1841 when he was almost four years old. He died in 1892 and interestingly his death certificate indicates he lived in Illinois all his life, even though he was clearly born in England on other records and the family lived for a short time in New York state before settling in Illinois. Clara Ann married again twice in 1893 and in 1899, both in Illinois. Just received her Illinois death certificate for 1928. On it her parents are listed as Nathaniel HENSON and Mary BURTON. Nathaniel, Mary, and Clara were all born in England. Only know that Clara was born about 1847, possibly November 14, 1847. On the U.S. Census records for Illinois have found Clara only AFTER her marriage: (1865 marriage as Clarey Ann Houston) 1870 as Clarissa Paul 1880 as Clarissa or Clarisea Paul 1900 as Clara Wright (date came to U.S. not shown) 1910 as Clara A. Wright (came to U.S. in 1850) 1920 as Clara Wright (came to U.S. in 1849, possibly naturalized in 1870--hard to read) (1928 death certificate as Clara Ann Wright) Can you find Clara Ann HENSON or her parents Nathaniel HENSON and Mary BURTON in England, on a ship passenger list, or in Illinois before 1865?
