    3. A search of http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl revealed two Mary Stevens in Wiveliscombe, one is #64, the other #69. You might want to look at these to see if they meet your criteria. I also found a number of Stevens christenings in the village of Cannington. I hope this may be of some help to you. Helen, USA -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. Up to now we always believed that she lived in West Street and I know this street as been redeveloped over the years. However, the certificate shows that she was living at 10 Halswell Lane in Bridgwater.when she died Could any one who knows Bridgwater well tell me where this Lane was and does it still exist ?. Thanks Mile McDonnell

    3. Can anyone makes some suggestions on where to look:- I have Robert Davis and family (shown as Dawes) b1796 1841 England Census and I am guessing his sister b1796 both showing as born Minehead, Somerset. Since the other adult Jane is Robert's wife. I am wondering if this dead end might arise if they were Quakers? What do the more experienced people think. Are there Quaker records somewhere? I have strong reasons to think that there might be a connection to the Dr Richard Brocklesby and Dr Ian Young family - is anyone researching these families or family? or have they been researched in the past in detail. I have checked all baptisms on http://wsomparreg.mysite.orange.co.uk by Martin Southwood and http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Minehead/BapMin_1794.html without success. Hoping for a pointer to take my research further. Sharon AUSTRALIA

    3. Helen I am looking for info on a Mary Stevens (Stephens) b cir1778 somewhere in Somerset. She came to Australia as a convict in 1801 and married John Lees, a soldier in the NSW Corp. You have mentioned two children and one is Cornelius. John and Mary had a son in Aust and his name was Cornelius so I wonder if it is a name that runs in the families. 1. [ENG-SOM] CORBETT
    2. John Scott
    3. HI List, Is anybody researching this surname in Somerset ? The name crops up in the DREW family of Taunton area as a first name in the 1850's and is carried on well into the 1920's and maybe later. It does not seem to show up in the Drew line before this so wonder if it connects to JANE PHILLIPS wife of Richard THOMAS DREW married 1846. Jane born 1828 Bradford Somerset, daughter of JOHN PHILLIPS and SARAH. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks Daphne. New Zealand.

    2. Pauline Lowe
    3. Greetings! I should love to be able to find the baptism of Mary Ann WILLIAMS whose birth place according to census 1851 to 1901 is given as Somerset, Bath or in the case of 1871 Somerset, Combe Down. From census ages I estimate her birth about 1823. She married John BARNETT in Cheltenham 12 July 1846 (ages of both bride and groom are recorded only 'of full age' ), died on 14 Jan 1905 age 81 and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery On the marriage cert her father is given as John WILLIAMS, quarryman, and his occupation seems consistent with the Combe Down locality. I know there is a church at Combe Down but was this built later than abt 1823 because I cannot find Combe Down listed in the Hugh Wallis Somerset pages for IGI. Can anyone point me in the right direction for possible baptism of Mary Ann and more about her father John Williams which might lead to marriage and name of spouse. I shall be very grateful for any clues. Many thanks. Pauline (born in Bath but I didn't know about the Williams when I lived there! Am now retired in Wales)

    3. Chillington [if it is the same as the manor] is just north of midway along the A30 between Chard & Crewkerne. A few references are made to Chillington Manor in the Victoria County History. These are a few bits. In 1232 it was part of the manor of South Petherton. The Pouletts in 1788 continued to lease the tithes of Lopen, Seavington & Chillington. Southarp [South Harp] was first described as a manor in 1475 -- & by the mid 15th century was linked with Chillington for administrative purposes. Southarp was sold together with Chillington in 1540. What seems odd is that Chillington appears more associated with Over Stratton & South Harp. The Pouletts went "bad" in 1788 & had to sell up in that area which caused a minor population shift to there to newly created small holdings. Nothing is said [that I've quickly found] to say anything of a major manor house at Chillington. Seymours owned it at one time so wonder if tracking them might help. Then again, Chillington doesn't arise in a general thinking in the Stratton area so maybe it was near the A30. Not much help but good luck. Geoff
