Thanks for the replies. I did think it meant something to do with surgeons but since in all the census for Wilfrid Edwin Watkin(s) it stated he was "of no occupation" or "living on own means" but I will try and contact the College of Surgeons Charani sent me and see if they have any information on him. I also know he was an artist. Many thanks to all who replied. Carole
Hi Pat, Thanks so much for clarifying. F.R.G.S. sounds much more plausible since I was sure he was not a surgeon and I can also understand how a G. could change to a C. over time. It is also interesting to note that 2 Atlantic Terrace East and 44 South Rd are one and the same. Thanks everyone for all the help in trying to sort out relatives who disowned the family of their son because he married a non catholic and of course he also left them in Canada to return to England in 1914. Carole
Can someone please shed some light on this cemetery. The wife and I visited it last Oct and were upset to see the condition of it, about 60% of the headstones appear to have been upturned/broken/vandalised. My question is: 1. Is the council/community planning to fix the yard up? 2. Is there accurate records of who has been buried there? 3. What is the history of the yard, was there a church on the site? I was only able to find one of my "PARKIN" names (James Parkin) but suspect there may more buried there. Unfortunately with the condition (Oct 07) of the yard it was near impossible to tell. Thanks Jeremy

Jon, are you researching NICHOLLS in Somerset? Our NICHOLLS family, and those families they married had many links with Cornwall. We have a John NICHOLLS who married Frances WILKINSON 12 October 1779 at St Cuthberts, Wells, Somerset...and records show that all their children were baptised..and subsequently married there. Hope there maybe a link Best wishes Pamela 2008/7/10 jonnixey.fh <jonnixey.fh@btinternet.com>: > Very many thanks Christine, much appreciated! > > Best wishes, > > Jon > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-SOMERSET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > -- Pamela NICHOLLS in Victoria, Australia Visit our family connections at: http://oysterfisher.tribalpages.com

Hello Carole, The transcription of the Memorial Inscription in the Cemetery is F.R.C.S., This has been done twice by different people but the last time it does state that part of the inscription is illegible. HOWEVER...... I have a copy of a 1917 Street Directory for Weston-super-Mare and at 44 South Road is Watkin, W. E., F.R.G.S. (which most probably stands for "Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society"). This makes more sense than if he had been a Surgeon and an Artist. I can understand how a G. might have been worn to a C. on an old stone. By the way - 44 South Road was also called 2 Atlantic Terrace East. Numbers 42-62 (just the even numbers) South Road were part of a Terrace of 11 houses which still exist today mostly now apartments. Hope this clarifies the situation a little Pat Carole Marshall wrote: > In the reply to my original enquiry from Pat Hase, it is mentioned that > a grave in Weston Super Mare Cemetary had an inscription of "Of your > charity pray for the soul of Margaret, beloved wife of Wilfred Edwin > Watkin, F.R.C.S." etc. - I am wondering what these initials means. Hi Pam, My grt grandmother was Sarah Jane Nicholls (born 1867), the daughter of William Nicholls (born about 1843 at Wellow) and Louisa (nee Turner born abt 1843 at Hennington). I believe William was the son of John Nicholls and Sarah (nee Biggs) who married at Bath RO Jun Q 1841, but I don't have their mar cert as yet to confirm this. John was born about 1815 at Midsomer Norton, according to the 1851 census. On the Nicholls research I've done so far, which I must say is very little, I've seen no connections to Cornwall yet. If you are aware of any links, I'd be very pleased to hear from you about it. Kindest regards, Jon
Carole, 44, South Road, Weston-s-Mare still exists and I went by the house today. It is in the centre of a large, old terrace block and looks like it has been converted into apartments. It is on the hill on the north side of the town and the road overlooks the beach and town centre. If you want a photo of the house and the surrounding area just let me know and I will get them for you when I am there again in a couple of weeks time. HI List, I am still looking for the birth / baptism of RICHARD DREW / DREWE born about 1788. When he married in 1811 in Taunton says he was of North Curry, same place of birth in the 1851 census when he was in Creech St Michael where his children were baptised. Later descendants were in Stoke St Mary, then in Taunton. Richard was a butcher as were a number of his descendants I have looked at the film of North Curry PR's and no sign of Drew / Drewe baptisms, only one marriage in 1753 and another in 1823. I can only see an Independant church in North Curry at that is from 1823. Any connections to Drew, and please any suggestions as to likely parishes to look at. Thanks Daphne New Zealand.
Bruton registers are being transcribed as we speak, so keep an eye on FreeREG and Ian Sage's transcription links page - it will take a while to complete the parish. http://www.freereg.org.uk/ http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ian.sage/PR/pr_index.html Yvonne Scrivener Wagga Wagga NSW Australia -----Original Message----- From: eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marilyn I am researching the Brain family from Bruton. They are in Lincolns Inn Fields, London.
