I've found several recently who didn't and that's without the marriages missing from the GRO indices. You could try contacting the relevant register offices to see if they have an entry which didn't make it to the GRO or didn't make it into the GRO indices. FreeREG is updated regularly, so if there's no relevant entry there now, try again next month. Sarah and Thomas may not have married in the expected parish either. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/

Yes, she most likely did marry twice. The marriage certificate should sort out which was her birth surname and which was her previous married name. See if you can find a marriage for a Sarah PRIOR to a WINDSOR. If you can, have a look for his death before Sarah married Thomas EDWARDS. If Sarah's first marriage was before 1 July 1837, try www.freereg.org.uk If neither option gives you an answer, you will probably have to buy Thomas and Sarah's marriage certificate. The alternative possibility was that Sarah was illegitimate and one name was her mother's and the other either her natural father's name or her stepfather's name. > One of their children called Sampson born 1847 is known as Sampson > Windsor .his birth certificates say his mother maiden name is Prior > and father as Thomas Windsor surely it would be Edwards but is > Windsor. > > So why would the father name her name and use his, has any one any > ideas that can help me sort this out and understand, I am willing > to send birth certificate to clear any misunderstanding in my > request for help. The father didn't have to register the child, the mother could also do so as could a friend, relative, midwife or another resident at the same address. There are three possible reasons why a child's surname is not as expected after a marriage. The first is the registrar asks for the father's name, meaning the *child's* father, but the mother gives *her* father's name. The second is the mother gives her previous husband's name rather than her current husband's. The third is the informant (father or another person) misunderstands the question and gives the wrong name or is just plain confused, especially if it's the first time the informant has registered a child. The second or third possibilities seem to be the most likely in your instance. At that time, the registrar had to find and register all the newborn children. Having a government official in your home would have flustered many a parent, I would think :)) The parent/s could also go to register their child themselves. They didn't have to wait for the registrar to find them. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/

    3. Hello Jenny, By coincidence, the February edition of the Chew Valley Gazette (a free, monthly, newspaper) carried an appeal from Peter Forrester for information on this air crash. I didn't notice the appeal at the time, but my attention was drawn by the follow-up in the March edition, which contains some of the information which Mr. Forrester has been sent. It is mainly eye witness accounts, and nothing about the inquests. Apparently Mr Forrester is writing a book on aircraft crashes with a Somerset connection, since the end of WWII. It is due to be released in October. He published his email address: [email protected] , and the Chew Valley Gazette can be contacted at [email protected] . Do you live near the Chew Valley area? The Gazette offices are in Chew Magna, and the paper is available through many outlets in the Chew Valley and Wrington Vale area - village shops, farm shops, tea rooms, etc. Dundry is about the furthest place to the north, and Chewton Mendip to the south. I hope this helps your quest. 3. It was (and in some families still is) common for the first child to be Baptised/Christened in the home Parish of the mother. A child could be born in Wellington and his baptism or christening might take place in Taunton if that was the home Parish of his mother. It would appear that at marriage he was not ordinarily resident in Wellington, hence his description as a sojourner. Another possibilty reharding baptism/christening. His parents may have been non-conformists. Somerset at this time (and still today) had/has many non-con churches and chapels. A sojourner was someone who was temporarily resident in a place so Wellington would not have been his place of birth, nor necessarily his parish either. Have you had a look on FreeREG to see if your man is listed there. Select Somerset as the county but not a place. It could be worth adding Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Devon, Dorset and Cornwall as well. IIRC, FreeREG is updated every month so if he's not there now, try again next month. If you put your man's name on the list, maybe someone will be able to find him or perhaps connect with him in some way. The IGI might also prove a finding aid, but be very careful with any patron submissions. 2. Hello everyone I have questions concerning an ancestors place of birth in 1790. This ancestor stated on two consecutive census returns that his place of birth was Wellington, Somerset. At the time of his marriage, in Wellington, he is identified as a sojourner. At this time I can't positively identify his baptism in any Wellington transcripts. I have sent for birth registries for three people of the same name born in that time frame and none seem to fit. His descendants have been relatively easy to trace and I have met several cousins in the process! I'm hoping that there is something I've missed with parish or municipal boundaries or something that only the 'locals' may be aware of. My questions are as follows; Is it possible that parish boundaries were different at that time in Wellington? Are there small villages near Wellington that may have been considered a part of Wellington? Any help is greatly appreciated. Mike
