    1. [ENG-SOM] William Davis family Winsham
    2. Beverly Tufts
    3. My great, great grandmother Matilda Davis was born 3 May 1842 in the parish of Winsham. Her parents were William Davis (b. abt 1803 in Broadwinsor, Dorset and d. abt 1844 in Winsham) and Deborah Matthews (b. abt 1803 in Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset and d. abt 1864 likely in Winsham). Other children of William and Deborah are William (b. 1829), Sarah (b. 1830), Elizabeth (b. 1832), George (b. 1833), James (b. 1835), John (b. 1837), Drusilla (b. 1838), and Samuel (b. 1840). My issue is that I have a 20 year gap in which I can not find any information on Matilda. She appears on the 1851 census in Winsham with her mother who is by then widowed and six of her siblings. The next information I can find is the 1871 census in Pakenham, Ontario, Canada in which she appears as the wife of Thomas Hill and a daughter Clara who is 8. Her husband Thomas dies in 1875 and Matilda marries George Needham in 1870 in Pakenham, Ontario. They eventually move to Forest River, North Dakota, USA and remain there until her death on 4 June 1916. Census information is that she came to Canada in 1869 or 1870, but I have not yet been able to find her on a passenger list. Clara married Robert Tufts on 15 Feb 1879 in Arnprior, Ontario, but she did not give her place of birth or parents’ names even though her mother is one of the witnesses. Her age is given as 22. I am not sure of her year of birth as it has shown as 1860, 1861 and 1862 on censuses, obituary, gravestone, family bible but her date of birth has remained consistent in all the records as 29 December. The obituary lists her place of birth as Battersea, England. However, I have not been able to find a marriage record for Matilda and Thomas Hill. I also have not been able to find a birth record for Clara Hill or under Clara Davis considering that she is possibly an illegitimate child of Matilda’s. Unfortunately the only information I have on Thomas Hill is that he was born abt 1840 in England and died in 1875 in Ontario, so not much information to work with. Is anyone connected to William Davis’ family and have any knowledge of Matilda? Any suggestions? Thanks, Bev

    3. Hi Diana, Yes, they are mine. The daughter, Eliza, married a James Maggs and then somewhere between 1861 and 1865 they migrated to the Durham coal fields. As Benjamin was only marked as a visitor, I had not thought about him being a cousin until discovering Joanna's surname. 3. Hi Charani I did add in the soundex option, but did not think to get inventive with what seems to me a simple name, unlike say one William Shakespeare who has, IIRC, 15 examples of his signature, all spelled differently. I'll give that a try. 3. Hi Andy, I will give that group a try, if only to see what other lines there are there. Do they have any non conformist or Catholic records? I ask because at various times down the generations my lot seem to have been members of every Christian church there was, sometimes alternating between churches for baptisms of different children, which I'm sure is not usual. 3. Hello Steve In 1851 a Joanna Plummer with husband Isaac is living at WRITHLINGTON, Somerset with a visitor to the household, Benjamin Coles, born Wellow. Could this be yours? 3. Hi Steve, As the marriage was in 1832 the register would not show parents names. I would recommend you join Wellow Hundred Yahoo Group ( http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/wellow/) where you will find transcription files. 3. Through FreeReg I have just identified the maiden name of my gg grandma, as above. She married Isaac PLUMMER in 1832 at Wellow and they produced a large part of the Durham MAGGS clan. Unfortunately their FreeReg marriage entry does not give their parents. According to all of the censuses from 1851 to 1881 she was born in Wellow Doing search for COLES in Wellow only gives one hit of the wrong gender at the wrong time, COLE gives many hist, but not Joanna and just searching Somerset doesn't work either. Unfortunately it won't let me search on just Joanna, working on the assumption that she was possibly born out of wedlock or to a first marriage. So, anybody else got any ideas? Cheers Steve

    2. Have you seen the 1851 census of Charlton Mackrell Norman? Betsy CAVE was then a glover, aged 13, living with her father James (age 42 born Somerton), his (second) wife Martha, and a half-brother William Collins CAVE age 6. Back in 1841, James CAVE was living just with 3 year old Betsey at Tuckers Batch in Charlton Mackrell. From the local parish registers (the ecclesiastical parish boundaries of Charlton Mackrell and Charlton Adam are intermingled): Charlton Mackrell - 9 April 1835 - James CAVE married Maria HOCKEY Charlton Mackrell - 13 March 1836 - baptism of Elizabeth, daughter of James & Maria CAVE Charlton Mackrell - 2 April 1836 - burial of Elizabeth CAVE, age 6 weeks Charlton Mackrell - 22 April 1838 - baptism of Betsy, daughter of James & Maria CAVE Charlton Mackrell - 22 November 1839 - burial of Maria CAVE, age 27 Charlton Adam - 24 January 1844 - James CAVE, widower, married Martha HUNT, widow. His father was John CAVE, labourer, and her father was William COLLINS, stone mason. A James CAVE, son of John and Sarah, was baptised at Somerton on 3 Nov 1811 (and daughters Jane, on 1 Nov 1807, and Elizabeth, on 13 Aug 1815, were also baptised there). I have copied this message to your personal email address because my first message to the list bounced inexplicably. George Every, bpt 1835 Podimore emigrated to Australia 1856/7 on the ‘Fitjames’, landing Sydney. Married there 1858 to Betsey Cave, b abt 1837 Charlton Mackeral. Emigrated 1857 on the ‘Zeminder’. They settled in Glen Innes, Northern NSW. I have run into a brick wall with the ancestors of Betsy, Can any kind person help. Ruby Faunt, my contact for the Australian Everys, died a few years ago and so I have lost contact with that branch of my family. I would like to make contact with any descendants of George and would be happy to exchange my notes on both the Australian branch and the original Somerset Family. Finally, does anyone have any information on the two ships involved. Although I now live in South Australia, I am descended from the Somerset families who, after George left, changed the name to Avery. Norman Pearce

    2. >From Townsville Daily Bulletin ( Qld.: 1885-1954 ) Tuesday 13 May 1913 Page 3 of 8 ( Australia Trove ) The death occurred on March 23 at his residence, Tangier Villa, Castle Green, Taunton, England, of Mr. John Crump GREENE , father of Mrs. COPELAND , Mitchell-street, and an old and respected townsman of Taunton. He was for 50 years connected with the typographical department of the "Somerset County Gazette," and that paper devotes a column to the long and honorable career of Mr. GREENE both as a citizen and a churchman, and also publishes his portrait. The deceased gentleman was in his seventy-eighth year, and although a good deal invalided of late by occasional attacks of bronchitis and influenza, could with difficulty be persuaded to relinquish any portion of his work, and would never seriously entertain the suggestion often made of taking a holiday, but practically remained in harness until a few days before his death.
