    3. I am posting this correspondence to the Somerset List in case anyone else has any comments. I will reply to Carole's latest email when this evening. Does anyone have an email address for SomersetLarders as the link on the website has been giving me problems. regards Adrian ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris-and-Carole Harris To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, July 14, 2011 1:27 AM Subject: RE: Walls of Heath House Hi Adrian, I’m not sure where they got the addition of Joseph to David Wall’s name either, although it does seem a coincidence that Joseph was born ABT 1801 and David was baptised in 1801. One possibility is that Joseph was the first-born of his parents and that his mother went back to her parents in Wedmore for the birth as was quite often the case. The baptism would then have taken place in their own parish (maybe one of the surrounding villages) at a later date. It looks like the John Wall that died in 1857 (Abode Heathhouse) was buried on the 24th March 1857 aged 21, this would make his year of birth ABT 1836 not 1825 (or did you mean 1835?) as in William Taverner Wall’s son – there is a baptism for John on the 26th April 1835 – Parents: William & Elizabeth – Abode: Heath-house – Fathers. I see looking again at www.familysearch.org “your” John married Louisa Gould on the 24th October 1858 at St Cuthbert’s, Wells, Somerset so yes that is an obvious mistake on the Somerset Larders site! Also the last three children listed by the Somerset Larders don’t seem to tie in with Joseph & Susannah either, so yet another discrepancy. I have no objections to you sending my reply(ies) and your answer to the Somerset list. Best Wishes Carole ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Walls of Heath House Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2011 22:37:35 +0200 Hi Carole Thank you for all the work you have gone to in your reply. The information you have given me regarding the children ties in with the family I am looking for, but I am unsure about the SomersetLarders website's addition of "Joseph" to David WALLs name. In the Wedmore Baptismal Parish Register, David WALL, baptized on 12 March 1801, did not have Joseph as a middle name . All reference I have to "our" Joseph WALL in the Parish Registers and Census records refers to him only as Joseph WALL. I have been unable to make contact with the SomersetLarders website administrator through their "contact us" facility and therefore do not know how they took the leap from David WALL to David Joseph WALL. If I could find the marriage of "our" Joseph WALL to Susanna(h) this might help to verify the names. The other thing that worries me is that SomersetLarders shows John WALL baptized BEF 28 January 1834 as having died in March 1857, which is not the case with "our" John WALL who married and had at least 6 children! I suspect that the John who died ay have been the son of William Taverner WALL who was baptized on 26 Apr 1825. Would you have any objection to me sending your reply and my answer to the Somerset list? all the best Adrian ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris-and-Carole Harris To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 8:59 PM Subject: Walls of Heath House Adrian, www.somersetlarders.com has a David Joseph Wall born BEF 12 March 1801 married to Susannah Stone with the following children – Hannah born BEF 29 Jan 1822 Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ born BEF 5 November 1826 – Died 1897 at Rodney Stoke, Somerset Soloman born BEF 13 September 1827 – Married Elizabeth Urch 1853 Axbridge, Somerset – Died 1897 Axbridge, Somerset Benjamin born BEF 28 March 1830 – Married Elizabeth Tilley 1851 Wedmore – Died 1906 Axbridge, Somerset Joseph born BEF 10 April 1832 – Died 3 December 1854 Eureka Stockade, Ballarat, Vic, Australia John born BEF 28 January 1834 – Died March 1857 Wedmore – Buried 24 March 1857 Wedmore Edmund born BEF 20 April 1837 – Married Ellen Frederick born 1839 Mary Ann 1844 Mary Ann ABT 1845 (Mother Unknown) Assuming this is the correct family www.freereg.org.uk have the following baptisms for children of Joseph & Susannah Wall Hannah 29/1/1824, Betsey 5/11/1826, Soloman 13/9/1827, Benjamin 28/3/1830, Joseph 8/3/1832, John 28/1/8136, Edward 20/4/1837 No baptisms for Frederick or either of the Mary Ann’s David Wall, son of Jonathan & Hannah Wall was baptised on the 12 March 1801 at Wedmore, Somerset (www.tutton.org) Susannah Wall was buried on the 19 May 1841 at St Mary’s Wedmore, Somerset (www.tuton.org) I can’t find a marriage for either a Joseph or David Wall to Susannah Stone but it may be worth bearing David in mind when searching for a marriage or burial in the future. 3. Dear list members I am researching my wife's family, the WALLs, who hailed from Heath House/Wedmore area. Their descendants emigrated to South Africa in 1902. A few years ago I was assisted by list members with information relating to John WALL who was born in 1834 and baptized on 28 Jan 1836 in St Mary's Church, Wedmore. I am hoping that some kind person can assist me with John's father, Joseph WALL, who according to the 1851 & 1861 Censuses (Censii) was born in Wedmore. The mother of his children was Susanna(h) but I have been unable to find a record of the marriage. They had about 8 children all of whom were baptzed in St Mary's Church, Wedmore and were living at Heath House/Wedmore. I have also been unable to find Joseph's baptism record in the Wedmore parish records and wonder if he was either not baptized or if it occured in another parish. I would appreciate any help which can be offered. Does anyone know if any work has been done on recording the memorials on the tombstones in the Wedmore Church cemeteries? Susannah WALL died and was buried on 19 May 1841 in Wedmore and if a tombstone exists and is legible, it may yield some clues (the Death Certificate has not). My wife and I are visiting the area in September and I would be very pleased if I could progress past the 1800 barrier. regards Adrian Rowe Durban, South Africa

    3. Thanks to all on the Somerset List re my request for information about obtaining Plot Numbers for the Quantock Road Cemetery. Some time ago I believed that my aunt and grandmother were were buried in Wembdon Road Cemetery and was trying to find out how to find their plot numbers but I have now just established they were actually buried in the Quantock Road cemetery hence my attempt to try and find out their plot numbers Thanks again In trying to complete my mothers family story I am also having difficulty in locating where they lived in the 1950's. I know the area they were in has all been re developed in the1960's but I wonder if any member of the list has an older street map before 1960 showing West Street and the very nearby Halswell Lane which is shown on their death Certificate. Also a similar older street map showing the location of Northgate Lodge. An email copy of these two street map pages would be very welcome Thanks again Michael McDonnell Adelaide Australia

    2. Look on www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html The 1888, 1904 and 1930 1:2,500 maps show . Heading out of Bridgwater along West Street, Halswell Lane ran south-east - after and parallel to the canal. There is a Halswell Close in the same area now - you can find it on Google Maps. Northgate Lodge would have been the NHS hospital which took over on the workhouse site after 1948. See www.workhouses.org.uk/Bridgwater/ The Somerset Heritage Centre http://www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ does hold some records including: Bridgwater Northgate Lodge Registers of inmates C\PA\B/50 ? - 1969 Bridgwater Northgate Lodge Register of Deaths C\PA\B/51 1914 - 1958 but they are not open for public viewing because of their recent date. Hope this helps, Celia <snip> >In trying to complete my mothers family story I am also having >difficulty in locating where they lived in the 1950's. Hi Jan, It's no mystery to me. I think 'Somers Hill' was in the area known as Summer Hill in St. George near Bristol. There were schools in this locality later in the 19th century. There's an entry for Henry BANWELL, Gent's Boarding School, Summer Hill, St George's, Bristol in Pigot's Directory of Bristol of 1830: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Bristol/ABBOTtoDUFFETT.html On the following Bristol Information web page, there's a reference to Mrs Sanderson's School for Young Ladies being originally at Summer Hill House, St. George's: http://www.bristolinformation.co.uk/srch/srchit.asp?gdoc=el&first=400&howmany=200&data=&field=&match=and&dir=Next+200&mde=list&category=all On this page there's also reference to a newspaper advertisement of July 1865 in which Miss Sanderson informed friends and pupils of the removal of her establishment from Summer Hill to 9 Berkeley Square. 3. Thanks, Josephine! Googling "Somers Hill" also brings up an area called Pilgrim's Way, Chew. I don't know if this is an old name for the area or if it's a current house name. The Will definitely has the spelling Somers Hill. Because he was running a school, I'm inclined to think it was closer to Bristol. (Down Under, we consider distances differently as eg I can go to Sydney in back in one day - a car trip of three hours each way!) However, I wondered if he had a country house. Thank you for giving me the dates of deeds of messuage and land and noting from 1835. Maybe I should track what has happened to earlier land records.
