    1. [ENG-SOM] Crew members lost on "MERRIMAC"
    2. >From The Morning Post ( London, England ), Saturday, December 02, 1899; pg. 7; Issue 39780. OVERDUE STEAMSHIP. - Messrs. Elder Dempster's 4,000-ton steamer " Merrimac ", built in Belfast nine years since, now 37 days out from Quebec for Belfast, with a general cargo, is still missing. The passage usually occupies 14 days, and, as she has neither been spoken nor heard of since leaving Quebec, it is feared she has foundered in the Atlantic with all hands. The "Merrimac" carried a crew of 26, the majority hailing from Liverpool. >From The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post ( Bristol, England ), Saturday, December 30, 1899; Issue 16112. THE MISSING MERRIMAC. The Elder Dempster steamer " Merrimac", 59 days out from Quebec to Belfast, and 46 days overdue, has never been heard of since leaving Quebec. In the "Liverpool Journal of Commerce" last week the vessel was posted as uninsurable, and any hope of her seems now to have been abandoned. The only chance is that some of the crew may have been picked up in their boats, but even then they ought to have been heard of by this time. Mr. Charles JARMAN has been collecting information as to the addresses of the crew and the families dependant upon the men, and they are given below. Several gentlemen have approached by Mr. JARMAN with a view to forming a committee and starting a fund. Elder, Dempster & Co. are acting generously in the matter, and are paying to the friends or relatives the men's wages, and they are also taking steps to do something further with reference to a fund for helping them. The following is the complete list referred to :- E. H. DAVIES , master, Farum Villa, St. Matthew's Road, Cotham. T. R. MUSKER , mate, Bristol. D. 3. HI Pat Yes we have that announcement and I am trying to find the birthplace and ate and mother , father is James, of Robert Evans. His wife Mary Tucker was born at Wells Somerset. Some events took place at Gloucestershire, butnot the birth so it appears. Mary Ann ended back at Bedminster, somerset. Any EVans or Tucker famlies from this area would be useful. 3. I'm looking for an ONLINE source for a circa 1800-1855 West Buckland area map, and anyone else working on the Halfyard & Wright families of West Buckland, Holcombe Rogus, Wellington & Taunton. Last winter I photographed a 1806 contract (and other HALFYARD land documents) at the Taunton Archives. A relative has spent MANY MANY hours transcribing this contract, covering a significant amount of land, buildings and orchards, however we haven't been able to discern the exact location of the farm. The contract was between: Henry HALFYARD of West Buckland (Blacksmith) and Richard, Bishop of Bath and Wells for the lease of Wood Acre Cottage its Garden and Orchard in West Buckland. The contract was made on the Sixteenth December 1806 in the 47th Year of the reign of George III (which would be 1806) for the princely sum of 8 shillings and sixpence. Thanks, JB in California.

    3. I have now hit the a final brick wall in my search to identify where a Bridgwater street was before major redevelopment took place in the 1960's I do have a current street plan of Bridgwater and West Street stills exists BUT there used to be a lane leading from it and this is the one I would really like to find. It may have run from West Street down past a pub from West Street , and whether this pub still exists is a question mark. The missing street I am trying to trace was Halswell Lane. I know that the bridgwater library may be able to help but at a cost and as I am living in Australia and a pensioner it is a little difficult I am putting the finishing touches to my mothers family history and it would be good to be able to complete the final missing piece Any help would be gratefully received Michael McDonnell Adelaide Australia

    1. [ENG-SOM] HENRY / HARRY OSMOND
    2. My gt. grandfgather married twice and moved around the counties of Dorset, Devon and Somerset before finally settling in Milverton. I have the following information relating to his second marriage, the children being half siblings to my grandfather. I would be pleased if there is anyone out there who knows anything of the family. In 1901 Henry is found at Uplowman near Tiverton in Devon, living in a steam roller and presumably working on road-building, and has deducted 5 years from his age.. His wife was not with him but he was married, to his second wife [Lavinia]. Since finding the family on the 1911 Census, I was able to locate Lavinia and 3 older children at Dorchester in 1901, where she gave her place of birth as Dawlish, Devon, but in 1911 said she was born in Cornwall. >From the Free BMDs, their marriage took place at Weymouth in June Quarter 1896.
