    1. [ENG-SOM] Crocker - Cregow -Crugowe - de Crequer - de Crevecoeur.
    2. Hello, The following may be too distant and esoteric to be of much interest to most website members. However, I have become very interested in my Y-halpogroup, which is part of particular project with FamilytreeDNA, including several surnames, all with an early common ancestor. Perhaps 1500 to 2000 years ago.(Bailey is another of the surnames in the project.) The haplogroup is said to be unusual with a possible common ancestor in Somerset Shire area. Although my paternal surname is thought to be Gaelic or Celtic and we know from DNA results that our ancestors are from Cornwall, my Y-haplogroup may be from northern Europe, such as the Vikings. The Norse men seemed to have been everywhere in Europe, including Ireland, Scotland, England, Cornwall, and also western coast of France. Some Cregoe/Cragoe researcher believe that the surname may have been de Creve-coeur, a village in Normandy. The Creve-coeurs arrived in England with Normans accompanying William and his army. Robert de Creve-coeur began construction of the stone Leeds Castle in Kent. The phonetic similarities in Old English and French between Creve-coeur, Crequer, Crugowe, and Crocker has been of special interest to me. Steade In a message dated 11/7/2011 6:26:57 P.M. 1. [ENG-SOM] SUTTON Family Interest
    2. Margaret Baxter
    3. Re-posting my interest – Just in case the mystery can be solved please. SUTTON. Edward went to Ireland and met and married Mary Coates. They had a child Henry in Belfast in 1840 (according to marriage & death certs). SUTTON. Mary was on the 1841 census in Combe, St. Nicholas. But no sign of husband Edward or child Henry on census. SUTTON. Arabella was born 1843 in Combe, St. Nicholas. Birth cert. confirms parentage. SUTTON. Eleanor was born 1849 in Combe St. Nicholas. Birth cert. confirms parentage. According to a print out from Ireland about the Coates burial plot. It states Edward Sutton died and buried in Ireland 1850. This ties in with 1851 census of Combe St Nicholas that Mary is now a widow. Again on the 1861 census. Mystery is : Where did Mary go after Somerset? I have been unable to find her birth in Ireland. I have been unable to find her death. Why does her son Henry not show on the census of Somerset? (He migrated to Australia in about 1857) Where was her husband Edward ? Why did she come to Somerset? Perhaps this was Edward’s birthplace. Posting the above again – Just in case someone can solve my case. Regards.............Margaret a P

    3. Steade, I also have Norse Viking ancestors who came into Falaise, France in the 900s according to a set of History books printed in the 1800s which I inherited. I will have to dig the books out of a box in the closet and see if I can find your names shown. My two Hinton ancestors accompanied Geoffrey de Mandeville from France to England in the Conquest and were given land in Northamptonshire - they not only received their land from Sir Geoffrey, they got their surname from the places they lived, Hinton and Hinton in the Hedges. Seems that only the noblemen had surnames prior to then. One of my cousins had his DNA tested to help us prove our lineage - not Somerset related but since there were nine (yes - 9) different DNA related Cobb families who moved to the Colonies in the 1600s, knowing from which one of these Cobb families we descended narrowed down our research quite a bit. Give me some time since I may not be home much during the holidays this winter. 3. Hi Beverly, Had a look in the new Familysearch and found Humphrey Webber chr 16 October 1702 at Topsham, Devon. Parents Humphrey Webber and Elizabeth. Then their marraige Humphrey Webber, 8th September 1700, Topsham Devon to Elizabeth Lauis. It is on the old familysearch as well. Batch number P001841, source film 96276. The batch number gives you other children and others in Topsham. This could be your Humphrey. I haven't come across the name Humphrey in anyof our Webbers. Anyway take a look. 2. Dear Philip, I expect so somewhere along the line, as it is such an unusual name, though only via my gt. grandad's second marriage [we come from the first one]. One of his daughters married an IND and I tracked some births for them, 20thC, but I have not tracked them back further than Cornwall as yet. I would love to have contact with some of his [Henry OSMOND's] other descendants as we only have one photo of my grandfather and none of any others in the family. I will make a note of the soldier. Best wishes and thanks, WENDY
