Hello I think Judy has got it about right. The only thing is that a DVThrombisis tends to give a pale swollen limb as in the "White Leg" of pregnancy, and does not often ulcerate in the early stages. I suspect that the basic condition was an infection and the DVT and Pulmonary embolism were secondary to that.
