    1. Re: [ENG-SHROP] (ENG-SHROP) Gittos family name

    3. Dear Pam, I have checked the IGI for William Gittos 6/7/1804 and Benjamin Gittos b 1808 parents Edward Gittos and Mary Ann Piggot. The following facts confirm that this is not the family I am looking for. While William Gittos was christened on 22 May 1805, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, he actually DIED in 1843 aged 38 years as per IGI information I have. The William I am researching who was transported to Tasmania died on the 28th September 1840 at a little town called Macquarie Plain in Tasmania aged 36 years. Likewise Benjamin (son of Edward Gittos and Mary Ann Piggott) born 1808 Bridgnorth Shropshire DIED 6th August 1884 aged 76 years according to the IGI. Benjamin Gittus who I claim to be my g.g. grandfather died on 7 January 1891 aged 83 at Macquarie Plains, Tasmania. I know this puts their birth dates at around 1808 for Benjamin and William 1804 but neither could read or write and they probably had a very strong accent which made them hard to understand. Also maybe they did not reveal their real age because they simply did not know. Many folk who were ignorant did not give all personal information when requested to do so. This has been evident in convict families here in Australia as it was looked "down upon" by their descendents to "dig into the past" and to some extent it still is by some! Thanks heaps for all your help and comments so far, keep them coming as you seem to have had lots of experience in this researching activity. Regards, Kathleen. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Craven" <pamcraven@mynow.co.uk> To: <eng-shropshire-plus@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2006 7:05 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-SHROP] (ENG-SHROP) Gittos family name > If you go to the following site you will find that Benjamin Gittus, was > tried for theft in Birmingham aged 15 in 1824 at Warwick and was acquitted. > This means he was b 1809 not 1801? > > http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/corporate%5Cprisoner.nsf/AllDocs/C761518B83D9 > D75980256E4A0043A0F4?opendocument > > The only others I can find are > > James Gittens 6 mth in Goal in 1813 > William Gittens Acquitted in 1820 > Benjamin above aged 15 Acquitted > Wlater Gittens aged 25 in 1894 case Discharged > > None of the Warwick cases show that they were transported? > > Here is main page if you want to search further > > http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/Web/corporate/pages.nsf/Links/6022586A99937FF > A80256ED9005765AF > > Are we looking for the right family? > > ON IGI someone has put into LDS a William Gittos 6/7/1804 and Benjamin > Gittos b 1808 parents Edward Gittos and Many Ann Piggot > > This Edward and Mary married Astley Abbots 19/4/1790 ref M032181 > > > Regards Pam > > > -----Original Message----- > From: eng-shropshire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:eng-shropshire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Irene M. > Fullarton > Sent: 19 September 2006 23:38 > To: eng-shropshire-plus@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [ENG-SHROP] (ENG-SHROP) Gittos family name > > Hi Kathleen, > > Not sure if this helps but John mar.
