Joy Not sure what doesn't add up? Died 1946 aged 88 therefore dob = c1858 34 when son married in 1894 dob = c1860 25 when he married in 1886 dob = c1861 You are talking about a 2/3 year time line which is possible depending when birth dates where, when marriages took place. You are lucky that you have an age on the wedding certificate stating 25 yrs most just say 'of age' meaning over the age of consent. By the time he died people would have been working out his age. ie guess - when asked would say he was about 88, don't forget they did not celebrate birthdays in the same way we do now so people were not always sure how old they were. It became more important once they brought in old age pensions then people had to prove their age. "Full age" or "of age" meant the person concerned was 21 or over. That wasn't always the case though. A year out, OK, as you say, they didn't always know exactly how old they were but it could be a lot further out. Men were as prone to adjusting their age as women, esp when she was older than him. -- Charani (UK)
