    3. Hi Charles I have only seriously started looking at the Sankeys in Shopshire for just a few days 15th September actually. The reason being that for years I have been trying to find the marriage of my Grandfather to Emily Sankey (his second wife - I am descended from his first wife), However, family lore is that his first wife was a first cousin (yes I have "proven" that), the story goes on that when he married again it was to another cousin. After searching for several years, freeBMD updated and there about 3 weeks ago, I found it and immediately sent for the certificate which arrived on 15th Sept. Emily was born 1867 (I thought that she was about that year from her death certificate, but knowing she was 45 when she married Granddad, I thought she was a widow and was looking for any other name but that, I was quite shocked to read Spinster and that her father Edwin was a Woodsman. I looked on Family search for Emily Sankey born 1867 father Edwin and found them. I agree with what you say his death, it does say aged 69 which agrees with the early censuses. Regarding his birth, the censuses. The 41 says born 1836, the 51 says 1837, I thought I had the 1861 but cannot find it now. The 1871 says he was born 1840, the 1881 says age 41 which makes it 1840. I thought I had the 1891 as well (these two lost ones must be together somewhere). The 1901 is really strange, that says 75 but that is obviously incorrect. It also says that Caroline is 57 which is also incorrect - so much for the 1841 being out by up to 5 years but the others being correct. That is why I put between 36 and 41 although I agree with you 1836 seems the most likely. No I don't have the birth of Thomas except for the census age which in 1861 was 1908 and in 1871 it was 1810. I thought this might be on IGI as the records stop at 1812, but no, it wasn't. Another contact I have but him and his wife Sarah born at Bridgenorth. The 1861 says Mary ????? (can't read the surname) mother in law born Stoke St Milborough. However in 1851, there is a Mary Linnaker staying with them put as a lodger, but about the right age to be Sarah's mother, so I wondered if the bit I couldn't read was Linacre (different spelling) but that might be me WANTING it to that, I am not at all sure. Sarah was still alive age 73 and living with son Shadrack in 1881. Edwin married Caroline Lewis in 1866 registered at Ludlow, so probably married Stanton Lacy. In the 1851 census Caroline was age 6 born Stanton Lacy. Her father was Samuel Lewis born Wistanstow age 52 her mother Margaret age 53 born Stanton Lacy and all the children born Stanton Lacy. I have not found the marriage, but the married daughter was aged 19. However, there was also a Lewis grandchild staying with them, so there must be another son old enough to have a 2 year old son. So probably a bit older than his sister. So I would think they amrried c 1930ish. Again, I have not found the marriage. I think that is just about all I have found so far. Except to say there were 3 Samuel Lewis' born at Winstanstow c 1800. The one born 1799 fits in with Samuel's age on the census. There was one born 1800, but I think he must have died as there is another born to the same parents just 13 months later. As an educated guess, I would say the earlier Samuel was Caroline's father, but of course that needs to be "proven". I would be interested in hearing how you are related to these Sankeys. I have still not fitted Emily in as related to Grandad ergo, my mother and myself and I would love to "prove" or "disprove" this fact. My great grandparents names were Watts, Kington and Woodward, so if Grandad was a first cousin, those names should come in somewhere. I thought I had all his cousins marriages, but find I am about 3 short. My cousin also heard the same story from her mother, so I think there must be a grain of truth somewhere. I think now that you have all my research, which isn't bad for 5 days work, but I have come to a full stop. If you can throw any light on the subject I would be absolutely delighted. Hopefully, someone will reply to my query and if they reply off-list, I will let you know the result.
