    3. Hello Linda I see that you have films, and I wondered if I could ask you a favour - do you do look-ups, please? For more than 30 years I have been looking for a baptism for my gggggrandfather John SANDS. He was married at Ellesmere on 6 June 1730. I have a copy of his marriage licence in which his bride's surname is WARD but when I looked on a film many years ago it appears in the register as either HEWARD or HOWARD (the second letter is indistinct). Both are described as "of Whitchurch". John was described as a Malster. He was buried at Prees 26 July 1798 "age 92". The IGI shows 8 baptisms for children of John SANDS at Whitchurch 1708 - 1725 but when I saw the originals there is one missed off the IGI, "5 July 1703 Martha, bastard daughter of John SANDS and Mary LEA of Whitchurch". My John would fit in the gap. However I can't find a marriage for John senior. Perhaps if I found one it would lead to the baptism. I suspect that this John might be the John, son of John SANDES, baptised at Ellesmere 16 July 1681. My hypothesis which I have so far been unsuccessful in either proving or disproving is that John born c 1706 is the grandson of John who had 13 children baptised at Ellesmere 1680 - 1698. A deed dated 24 June 1700 refers to "a burgage or dwelling house called the sign of the Red Lyon, Elismer, late in tenure of William SWANWICKE and John SANDS" I believe that he is the John SANDS buried at Ellesmere 6 May 1726. His widow Judith was buried there 2 January 1738 so possibly John born c 1706 was living with his grandmother, and possibly involved in the family business. I have a copy of a settlement examination showing that he moved to Prees in 1737 and I know from other sources that he was involved in the licensed trade there. If you are able to look at your films for the relevant dates I should be most grateful. I recall that the quality of the Ellesmere ones is poor, and a fresh eye might pick up something that I missed. Please contact me off list if you need further information. I would like to see if I can put your links back enough to get into the films I have for Ellesmere/Shropshire Church records. This birth circa is the same as my VENALBES/LEA lines in same area and there is crossover in my records with some of the surnames in these lists of marriages.
