Hello Wendy, You can find the Historical Directories online free here: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ You can start looking for the 11 directories for Shropshire by clicking on Shropshire on the map on this Web page: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbylocation.asp I have been able to find family information by browsing the relevant areas. Would someone be willing to explain the best techniques they've found for using the search function? Thank you. Barbara Bradley Petura Message Board Post: Hello Linda, Thank you very much for the information. I'm not sure where to find the Historical Directories. I do have copies of George's military records retrieved by a very helpful Ancestry.co.uk member in London. I know he enlisted in Manchester in 1829. I believe him to be educated as he signed (in very nice penmanship) the enlistment papers. As far as trades go, most of the Griffiths' I've come across were general labourers. Let me know how I can contact you. Wendy
Hello Barbara and Linda When using the Historical Directories web site http://www.historicaldirectories.org I prefer to use the Keyword option from the front page. Click on the 'Find by Keywords' button then at the next screen you can select Shropshire (or elsewhere) in the top drop down list. I would then just enter your own Keyword(s) in the appropriate box, leaving Decade and Key Name as 'All'. Then just click the 'Find Directories' button and see what comes up. You can even search for John Jones and Jones, John by using the 'Within Operator' in the form John w/2 Jones where you are asking the system to find Jones and John within two words of each other because you never know which way round they are going to be written. See the Technical FAQ's http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/howto/howto7.asp#detailed for more information. When the list of Directories comes up on screen click on the word 'Directory' alongside whichever one(s) interest you and then I usually click on the 'Next Hit' button to go from one hit to the next.
