Morning listers, I have a number of ancestors who moved to Cannock from the Dawley area between the years 1860 and 1890. Wanting to improve their family situation and through lack of work, I can understand their moving away from the area. What I don't understand is 'why Cannock'. What could have enticed them to this location at this time? Has anyone any ideas please? Best Regards Paul Darrall in New Zealand
My grand parents moved to live in Cannock from Shropshire to be able to work in the mines . Thank you Margaret for the answer to my poser - didn't realise that Cannock was 'blessed' with coal mines. Seems our ancestors went from one mining district to another - out of the frying pan into the fire, as it were. Coal was found at Lethbridge and Crows Nest Pass, in demand for railways and copper smelters in the 'Boundary Country' (southen BC, Washington state, Montana) STAFFORDSHIRE COAL MINERS showed up in southern ALBERTA, even in Nova Scotia's CAPE BRETON Island at Sidney Mines. Guess what? The main Streets in Sidney Mines are STAFFORD Street, PITT Street, Also many CORBETT folk in the phone book today. WILKES BARRE, Pennsylvania also has a STAFFORD Street. I have a web page for SHARESHILL-CANNOCK where you can see many of the coal-mining surnames that connected & connected again over the years, PITT PACE CORBETT and others. Wishing this may be a help: http://www.pacefamilyhistory.info/pitt.htm Gord Pace Brighton/Colborne Ontario
Hi Paul Just read your mail and see at the bottom is a mention of a Gordon Pace and his interest in coal mining in the Staffs area. I have a missing man Morgan connolley .He was a coal miner in one of the Cannock mines in 1871 but no-one can find him after that date. not even his death. I just wondered if your friend Gordon Pace? had an index of men working in the mines in his area of the USA that came from Staffs. It's just an outside chance but may be worth while. regards Margaret ----- Original Message ----- From: "Apache" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2008 8:02 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-SHROP] Move to Cannock > On Sun, 24 Aug 2008 16:35:00 +1200, Paul wrote > > Thank you Margaret for the answer to my poser - didn't realise that Cannock > > was 'blessed' with coal mines.
