Hi Has anyone any info on Hilton Grange please My Gt x 4 Grandfather RICHARD WILCOX was said to live at Hilton Grange at his death 1855. Was it a house or estate or a area & it does it still exist. Any info on WILCOX in Worfield would be very much welcome. Many thanks Sue
Hello Sue I have found one reference to Hilton Grange but that just gives its location as Worfield which you already know. On the modern Ordnance Survey map it shows Grange Farm, Hilton so this is possibly the same place if your ancestor was a farmer. Unfortunately I can't see Hilton Grange or Grange Farm named on any early (c.1900) Ordnance Survey maps which makes it difficult locate precisely. If your ancestor was a farmer then you might find him on the Tithe Apportionment map and schedule (late 1830's) which will tell you which fields made up the farm but you will need to visit Hereford Diocesan Record Office at Hereford or The National Archives at Kew to see these. I'm not sure whether Shropshire Archives at Shrewsbury have a microfilm copy. If you go onto the Discovering Shropshire's History web site at http://www.discovershropshire.org.uk and put Hilton Grange into the search box at the top it should bring up one reference to a Printed Sale Catalogue which you will need to view at Shropshire Archives.
