You can narrow it down to 1851 to 1854. That would be enough to catch your lady, unless you have reason to believe she added/substracted a substantial number of years to her age at various times. Likewise with the deaths: I always take a death search up to when the person would be 100. Some of our ancestors lived surprisingly long lives. If Mary Jane was born in 1853, she'd only have been 48 by 1901. She could easily have lived to the 1930s. However, with a name like EVANS, it does make it considerably harder. As far as getting the right certificate goes: you can ask for a reference check to be done. If the check point given matches with the certificate, then it will be issued. If not, you'll get a partial refund, so all is not totally lost. How certain are you of the father's name? You have SHAW in brackets. Was that an alternative given name? A middle name? An alternative surname? Have you checked the 1861 census for your lady? It would be a cheaper and easier option.

    3. Hi Firebird thanks for taking the trouble to look at my problem maybe I wasn't clear enough I should have said I have Mary Jane at home aged 8 with her parents John Shaw Astbury and Elizabeth at Pelsall in 1861, she is still there in 1871 aged 18 years then she disappears. The fathers name is John Shaw Astbury so Shaw must be a middle name - he signs his name J.S.Astbury or J. Astbury. My cousin did phone the Madeley records office but was told that they do not offer the reference check service and we would need to buy the certificate. Have checked the only other marriages that I could find they are 1881, making her c 28 years which is possible they were to either Joseph Kingston or William Webster. However after checking the 1881 and 1891 for Mary, Mary J, or Mary Jane am still not throwing her up as being born in Pelsall. Hope you don't mind me sounding you out on this, here's hoping you may have another idea I can look at Thanks very much once again Regards Wendy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Firebird" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 12, 2009 6:54 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-SHROP] ASTBURY - EVANS > MALCOLM STANAWAY wrote: >> Hi I am new to this list and looking for help, I have Mary Jane >> ASTBURY bn 1853 Pelsall Staffs marrying SAMUEL EVANS in 1873 at >> MADELEY Shropshire.
