Helen, Aren't Smith & Jones wonderful surnames to trace. You never run short of possibilities. You missed a critical bit of information. Where was Louisa's birth registered? Look at the 1881 census and then find it in FreeBMD. Like you, my guess would be that Ann died in childbirth or shortly after. So I think you should only have to look in two places (1) where Louisa was born or (2) the nearest registry to Baschurch. It might also be worth checking where Elizabeth Dobson died. Presumably she was still with the family when she died. Peter
