    1. [ENG-SHROP] Joseph and Charlotte Heath and Family of Shrewsbury, Shropshire

    3. Hello, I wonder if anyone could help me with this query? I am trying to find out more about my great great grandmother Ellen Chant nee Heath from Shrewsbury. I believe that she may be the daughter of Joseph and Charlotte Heath who I have found on the 1851 and 1861 census'. In 1851 Joseph (aged 40) and Charlotte (aged 39) were living at Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury with children: Elizabeth - 16 Emma - 14 Morris? - 16 Mary - 5 Ellen - 3 Ann - 1 In 1861 the family was living at Beeches Lane: Joseph - 51 Charlotte - 48 Ellen - 14 Ann - 12 George - 10 Joseph Heath died in 1863 and the family moved to the Birkenhead area; Charlotte died in 1889 with her daughter, Mary, present at the death. I have found out bits and pieces about most of the children i.e. Ann married a German chap called "Meyer", Mary married someone named "Cadwallader" and then a chap called "John Egglestone" but I cannot find out anything more about the child Ellen and so, although I suspect that she may be my great great grandmother, I cannot make the connection. On FreeBMD I have found an Ellen Heath who seems to be the one who appears on these census returns - born 1847 in Shrewsbury - but again I cannot make the connection as I do not have a definite date of birth for my great great grandmother. I can find her in her married name of Ellen Chant on later census returns but her ages vary greatly and even her death certificate does not clarify this. If anyone can tell me anything at all about this family I would be most interested; particularly if someone else knows what happened to this Ellen Heath. The father, Joseph's, occupation is shown on various documents as "ostler", "groom" and "horse dealer" - could there be a gypsy connection here does anyone think? Mary Heath's first husband, Maurice Cadwallader, was a basket maker - is this a gypsy trade? I know that my great great grandmother, Ellen, married someone who was a basket maker also. Just one more question! Joseph Heath died in June 1863 with the place of death shown as "Back Lane", Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury. Would "Back Lane" have been an actual address in Shrewsbury or does this suggest that he died in the street? His death certificate states "exhaustion" and "apoplexy". I would love to receive any help, advice or comments! Many thanks, Rebecca South Yorkshire

No point in trying to guess if the Joseph HEATH family is your Ellen's. Could this be the reason you've not found Ellen's birth? Toni
