    1. [ENG-SHROP] George COLLEY & Charlotte YEATON - m1808 Wellington
    2. Peter Booth
    3. Although I've been on numerous mailing lists over many years, this is my first foray into Shropshire. I'm struggling to find records for the origins of the above couple. IGI has the 1808 marriage of George Colley to Cahrlotte Yeaton. I wonder if anyone has access to or could direct me to PR's. I'm hoping they might contain extra information like ages, parents, witnesses etc or even confirmation that they were both of the parish. There are five possible christenings of George in Shropshire between 1770-1790. One in Wellington in 1771 seems likely, but that would make him 36 when married which seems a bit old for the times. They had seven children between 1810 and 1825. George's death is registered in March 1838. Are there records for Wellington Cemeteries or other local Shropshire records that might help with this family. It doesn't get easier. Their daughter Elizabeth Colley, married William Smith in Sept 1837 at Wellington. Any takers for Smith??? Peter BOOTH - Family Historian, SYDNEY ---------------------------------------

    3. Thanks Mike and also to the others that replied off list It's definitely Astley-Abbots, the family wer there in 1841 and later Censuses (when they were in Sedgley, STS) they gave Astley Abbots as their place of birth, though the wife Ann couldn't seem to make up her mind where she was born :) Crowmore, Ellesmere or Hebsmor in various Censuses. I tend to think that Hebsmor was probably Ellesmere, just mis-heard by the Census Collector, unless anyone's got any better ideas that is. 3. Hello Kathryn Thank you very much for this information - I have had a look at the web site and found some interesting bits. I already have Ancestry UK so I probably can't use the free trial option. If I find more information about this family I guess they probably originated from your home country. Thanks again for your help. 3. Hello Ian There is a Crowmoor / Crowmere (different spellings at different times) 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Shrewsbury plus lots of other places beginning Crow.... all over the county. You say some of them were born at Astley Abbots but do be aware that there are several places in Shropshire called Astley or beginning with Astley, including the village of Astley 4.5 miles (7.2 km) NNE of Shrewsbury so do make sure you have picked the correct one. 3. Hello Everyone According to the UK Census of 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 George John MAGINESS was born 1851/2 Almsbury, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. I can't find Almsbury and wonder if it should read Amesbury. I know that George was in the UK on 15 Apr 1879 when he married my relative Mary GRIFFITHS at Loppington, Shropshire and they spent the rest of their life living in Liverpool. The marriage entry gives his father's name as Charles MAGINESS. Does anyone know if it is possible to find anything about George's Birth and/or possible Baptism in the USA or any census there between 1851/2 and 1879. I would be grateful for any passenger list record of his journey from the USA to the UK. Mike Shropshire, UK

Thanking you in anticipation. With best Wishes Sue

    1. [ENG-SHROP] ADMIN: Removal of Data from CheshireBMD
    2. Sherry Landa
    3. As many of you already know I am a great supporter of the UKBMD sites, having transcribed for both CHS and LAN, plus done other work for YKS. Some of you may be aware that CHS has recently reorganised their registration districts and this week Bob Kirk (whose permission I have to forward his email) has been alerted that one of the registrars wishes for some information to be removed from the CHS BMD website. I urge all list members to follow Bob's advice and email the registrar concerned and also, if a UK resident to send your local MP a copy. Hopefully if enough of us rally and MPs become involved the registrar in question will be forced to rethink his decision. I have emailed the same message to both the email addresses given below and am happy to share (privately) my email for anyone who might want a model-but mine is VERY forceful and does NOT mince words so be warned :-) Thanks for your anticipated support at keeping our records in the public domain. Best wishes Sherry Landa (in sunny-yes sunny, Oxford, UK) Bob's message: Basically the Registrar responsible for the New administrative area of East Cheshire (formerly Macclesfield) has asked that ALL the Maiden Names and Ages at Death be removed from the CheshireBMD web site for those areas for which he has now taken over.  This data has been collated by a team of volunteers working in the Register Office who have been able to check it against the original registers. It is a worrying precedent that this Registrar is trying to establish.  Much of the information is already in the Public Domain and published by the General Records Office in their indexes.  In the case of deaths, the age at death is given post March 1866 and for Births the maiden names appears post September 1911.  However he has asked that ALL this data be removed thus reducing the usefulness of the CheshireBMD index and there is always the possibility that other Registrars might follow his lead. Can I suggest that anyone who feels sufficiently strong over this matter or would like to add wait to our argument, emails the Register Offices in question and complains over the removal of this data.  If they get sufficient complaints they might just change their minds.  If you know the address of your local Cheshire councillor it might help to drop them a line also. The two email addresses are: CREWEREGISTEROFFICE@cheshireeast.gov.uk MacclesfieldRegisterOffice@cheshire.gov.uk Thanks for your support. Bob Kirk Dukinfield Cheshire

    2. Graham Price
    3. Susan, I have some baptism transcriptions I copied from original parish registers and BT's of Ellesmere, Shropshire (next door to Flintshire) of Owen people from 1803 to 1812. On the odd occasion they were put down as Owens and were from villages around Ellesmere such as Northwood, Eastwick, Trench. Also have some burials of Owen/s same district 1799 to 1822 (one from Oswestry). There are several marriages from 1789 to 1859. The baptisms & marriages will be on the IGI but there is more details from the transcriptions. If you could look at the IGI and see if any might be yours I will then be able to give you the full details. I won't have all of them, but will have most. All being, there were not all that many Owen/s around Ellesmere during the dates I mention. I cannot recall my reason for transcribing these people many years ago but it was probably for another researcher. I also have almost all Davies BMD's from St. Mary Ellesmere and some surrounding chapels, but doubt if any of these are yours. Cheers Graham Melbourne Oz
