Thank you for your prompt reply in view of your current position, I hope you have stopped shaking and can get a good nights sleep. How long has it been going now? We heard about the terrible storm you had but didn't realise you were still suffering. We have friends in West Melton Christchurch, I hope they are OK. I live in Cheshire which is the next county but records that far back are not easy to come by. Bye for now Yvonne
Does anyone know of a family named Cleverly in Shropshire during the 16/17th century please? Also does anyone have any information about John Hotchkiss of Whitchurch who was a draper and his son Samuel. Thank you

Hi All The old Julian Calender was changed to the Gregorian Calender in 1752 in Britain and the New Year officially started on the 1 January. Before yhat date the 25 March was the start of the year. The 11 March 1618 would be that as it would not become 1619 until 25 March Should also add that many treated the 1 January as the beginning of the year bore 1752. Hello Chris If you haven't checked recently, it is well worth doing an Internet search for any parishes in Shropshire (and other counties) where you know or think the registers were printed about a hundred years ago because they are now out of copyright and an assortment of copies are available online. With Whittington, and probably many other parishes, the name occurs in more than one county so you need to make sure you look at those for the correct county. Whittington Printed Register is being sold by Anguline Research Archives, either direct from them at www.anguline.co.uk or through their eBay site. Many other parishes can be found free on the Internet Archive at www.archive.org or on Google Books. I am seeking to confirm the parentage of Richard BENBOW (or BEMBO, or BEMBOW), who was born around 1833, and died in Llananno (Radnorshire) in 1862. Census records show his birthplace as Kerry (Ceri) in Montgomeryshire, but I have not found a baptismal record there. His marriage certificate names his father as Price BEMBO, farmer. One of two likely candidates is a Price/Pryce BENBOW/BEMBO/BEMBOW (1775, Newtown, MGY - 1860, Kerry) who was discussed in this list some years ago: after farming in Kerry he married his second wife, Elizabeth CROFT, in Norbury in Shropshire in 1820, and in 1841 they are at the Seven Stars in Pontesbury, with a ten-year old daughter Jane. Any help in tracing a baptismal record or in finding further information would be greatly appreciated. Shirley (in Powys)
I have recently subscribed to this list in the hope of finding more information about Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire ancestors who spent time over the border in Shropshire. Firstly, I am seeking the marriage record of Richard MORGAN(S) and his first wife Martha (probably around 1820), details of her parentage, and any christening records for their children. Richard was born in 1798 in Llanbadarn Fynydd (RAD), and census records for 1841 and 1851 show them in Beguildy (RAD) and Kerry (MGY), but their eldest daughter Elizabeth is said to be born in 1821 in Bettws, Salop (possibly Bettws-y-Crwyn?). Martha was not born in Radnorshire, but no other details are given. (Later children are Thomas, b. 1825, Mary, b .1830, Richard, b. 1833, and John, b. 1837, but these were probably born in Radnorshire.) I should be grateful for any help with this. Shirley
Mike Thanks for this - next time I'll read a bit better. I now remember I saw a mention of this on Twitter a few months back, someone was taken on an Ancestry tour and took a photo of them scanning these indexes. I posted the Twitpic to one of the Rootsweb lists I subscribe to, and someone replied that this wasn't the wills indexes. If I recall correctly, they were indexes retrieved from somewhere and it said at the time this was incomplete. Marvellous, Mike. I can access them from our library. I've been using the index microfilms through LDS with some success but, hopefully, this will now makes things much easier. Cheers Graham Melbourne Oz

Gordon, You need to supply more information like where John was born. You should have this from 1871 and 1881 census. Then it should just be a case of following him back through census records. 1841 and 1851 will possibly find him with parents. You can then use Family Search to verify parents and find their marriage. If in Lancashire you might need Lancs OLPC. But without a birthplace there will be thousands of possibilities. Peter in Sydney
