    3. Thankyou John, Sorry, I was replying to Judy's earlier letter....I have since been digging further back. I have found that Wm Southorn married Margaret Roden (another tobacco pipe manufacturer) in 1819. The earlier generation, in 1786, John Dougherty Roden married Joyce Hartshorne Poole, a sister of my line (John)... www.broseleypipes.co.uk/ provides good info too. Regards, Richard, NZ. ------------------------------ For more information see www.broseley.org.uk/historyofbros.htm#Pipes%20and%20Pottery and www.broseleypipes.co.uk The Cumberland Hotel was converted into apartments after the death of Ivor Southorn, but I believe that there are still members of the family living in the area. 3. Further to this an ancient email by Judy, ie.: 29 Mar 2004 10:32:17 Yes, I know this is an ancient message that I am replying to, but I have just been trawling through the old messages in the inbox. Your Rowland seems to have been a big cheese in Broseley, listed in 1895 Kellys under private residents (King St) as well as his entry in the commercial section: Smitheman Rowland & Co, builders and tobacco pipe manufacturers, Crown pipe works, King street. No mention of Edwin, but there was a rival: Southorn William & Co, tobacco pipe manufacturers by steam, Broseley pipe works, I also found this in the Broseley section: "Broseley has long enjoyed a great celebrity in the manufacture of superior glazed tobacco pipes, the establishments of William Southorn & Co and R. Smitheman & Co being amongst the most extensive in the kingdom." Judy...... At 2pm NZ time, 1am GMT (in 4.5 hrs time), Greymouth will be having their remembrance for the coal mine tragedy. Their mayor, Tony Kokshoorn's mother was a Southorn descendant, from the above pipe manufacturers. Are there any other descendants ?

    3. Hi Cliff I have found up to 50 variations on the IGI so one can get into problems with the name-simple name but a lot of spellings. I have made mine IKIN and a friend uses EKIN for various reasons, but I add the variations in my FT of the names found. 3. Many thanks Ken, I haven't had a look at that 'beta' search yet. While I'm at it, in reply to the Shrop Lloyd enquiry, I may as well say that I have a relie Edwin Bathurst who married Sarah Lloyd at Madeley 17 May 1823. They took over the Benthall Potteries (1851 census) from earlier Bathurst ancestors. Hi Richard, I enjoyed your story about Weaver and Stourport Here are a couple of items which may be of use 1) Newish pilot family search <http://beta.familysearch.org> I entered Elizabeth Weaver 1790 Kidderminster clicked on 1st downarrow and got Mathon 1789 2) used Hugh Wallis Batch site to collect the Wor Mathon Weavers around 1789 as GED file 3) used my EAZYREAD to get Source File:- I:/weaver-1789.ged CHRISTENINGS VERSION 5 PLACE :- Mathon, Worcester, England 0 JOHN /WEAVER/,, ChDATE 28 FEB 1762, ANNE, JOHN /WEAVER/ 1 ELIZABETH /WEAVER/,, ChDATE 13 SEP 1789, ELIZABETH, JOHN /WEAVER/ 3 RICHARD /WEAVER/,, ChDATE 13 FEB 1791, BETTY, JOHN /WEAVER/ 2 THOMAS /WEAVER/,, ChDATE 17 FEB 1793, ELIZABETH, JOHN /WEAVER/ 4 TIMOTHY /WEAVER/,, ChDATE 01 FEB 1795, ELIZABETH, JOHN /WEAVER/ 6 WILLIAM /WEAVER/,, ChDATE 27 OCT 1796, ELIZABETH, JOHN /WEAVER/ 5 JAMES /WEAVER/,, ChDATE 03 MAR 1799, ELIZABETH, JOHN /WEAVER/ I'd guess John c 1762 was the dad Ken My original letter that didn't get onto the Shropshire site: My Martha Tomlins married Frederick William Bathurst Poole Dec qtr 1840 at Madeley. The Ironbridge 'Museum of the Gorge' on the edge of the Severn was 'Tomlins Garage' about 100yrs ago. ---- Also, my gggggparents Elizabeth Weaver and William Hinton are on IGI, as marrying 8 Feb 1808 at Kidderminster, WOR (probably St.Marys CoE church). -------The following is a paragraph from page 91 of the Worcestershire 'Hunt End Book' - "Stourport-on-Severn" by Anne Bradford. I hope Anne wont mind. ------"MILL ROAD. Mill Road, leads of course, to the old site of Mitton Mill. The residents of Mill Road may not know that the one-time Mayor of Philadelphia, city and port of USA, came from their midst (ie. Stourport, Worcestershire). John Weaver was the fourth son of Benjamin Weaver who lived in Mill Road. His first employment was as an office boy at Wilden Iron Works, then he became a clerk in the office of the Severn & Canal Carrying Company. He came to Philadelphia, tried several jobs but wasn't satisfied until he went to work in a lawyer's office. He taught himself shorthand and typing so that he could improve his position, then he decided he wanted to be a fully-fledged lawyer and he studied in evening classes for five years until he was qualified. Although John Weaver was quiet and unassuming he was a man of steel. In a city which was notorious for its bribery, corruption, betting and gambling, John Weaver stood out as an honest, straightforward Christian and he was eventually elected as mayor. One year, he went on holiday in the Rockies and the council took the opportunity of his absence to authorise the sale of the town's gas works which would bring in a large revenue but increase the cost of gas to the townsfolk. Weavers' friends sent him a telegram to let him know what was going on, he rushed back and caught his colleagues unawares. Another time he managed to quell a riot of about a thousand black workers single-handedly. The townsfolk hailed him as a hero." Richard Poole, NZ.

    3. Hi Charlie One of the best things about putting the surnames in the subject line is that anyone coming along, months even years later to search the eng-Shropshire archives will see the surname almost immediately, whereas if it is hidden inside the email they will not and will simply by-pass the message/s. Now that I have changed the heading anyone coming along with Weaver connections with see that and will go back to 'Shropshire Ancestors' messages. You just never know, one day a fourth cousin or some such may come along searching the archives for that surname and jump for joy when they see your email address. Good fortune. Graham Melbourne Oz

    3. Hello Barbara, in AUS. I don't have any WEAVERs that late in Shropshire. My immigrant ancestor, Samuel, arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1623. I have 3 Richard's in my database. One was christened at Chelmarsh, 28 Jan 1572/3. Christening record states "son of Thomas of Sutton" [a village s.e. of Chelmarsh] This Thomas, as well as his brother, my William (1540) were shown in Chelmarsh records as "from Worfield Parish". Another Richard was Christened at Cardington 11 Mar 1598. He was a brother to my Samuel (1600). The 3rd Richard is the one who married Catherine CROFTE 9 Feb 1567 at Chelmarsh. I have no information on his lineage. None of these Richards are in my direct line. I have several Edwards, but all of them are much later and born in Ashe County, NC, the very n.w corner of the state. I know this is not much help to you, but may be something you can file away in case you get back to the 15-1600s in Shropshire. So many Williams, Richards, Samuels, etc. doesn't make it any easier. Where are you in AUS? I have friends there through an antique automobile club I used to run. 3. Hi all Been a while since I posted a request. I am searching for information on the Lloyd family in the following areas:- STS - Pelsall/Bloxwich/Walsall from about 1840 onwards SAL - Shrewsbury/Wellington/Atcham/Dawley Magna/Broseley 1700 to about 1840 Particularly Atcham/Chilton around 1700 as I have been unable to find the birth of Francis Lloyd or his marriage to Ann at this time although I have their children from 1712 onwards. Should you have any connection to the Lloyd family in these areas I would like to hear from you. A full list of the family to date and associated family names can be found on my website at www.trevlloyd.co.uk Many thanks in anticipation Trevor

    3. Thank you Peter Booth in Australia, very familiar with Australian history, thanks anyway. I am searching JOHN WATERS origins in UK. I am hoping someone with access to Parish Registers for Ludford, can confirm if the John WATERS who married Sarah Bridgwaters there in 1810, remained there, so that I can eliminate him as a likely candidate. If some kind person with access to those Registers could please check for me, I would be sincerely grateful. Thank you. Kind regards, Dawn (Tasmania, Aus.)

    3. Dawn, Found this but you may already have the information. http://www.angelfire.com/ak/krieggenealogy/paternal.html I'd try searching 1841 census of Wales for John Waters & Sarah born c1790 in England. You could also try 1851 which gives actual birthplaces, but they would be well into 60's. Have you searched for trial records or looked at convict arrivals to see if an extra data, especially age and native place or even birthplace. Another place to look might be her marriage certificate. I don't know about Tasmania, but other states usually show parents. You might also find her birthplace on births of subsequent children. Depending if it was known, her parents may also be on death certificate. Peter in Sydney

    1. [ENG-SHROP] John & Sarah WATERS, Ludford
    2. D & H Stanton
    3. Hello Listers, The IGI shows a marriage for John WATERS to Sarah BRIDGWATERS in Ludford on 22/7/1810. I've been conducting a fruitless search for a long time, to find John WATERS and probably wife & family, who I believe went to Wales in the early 19th century for the Iron Ore & Coal industry. I think Ludford is probably strategically placed for a starting point (please correct me if I'm wrong); also, 1810 is a good fit for a marriage to produce a daughter in c1815, my 3xGrtGrandmother, Sarah WATERS. I have a little more information about her, only because she was tried in Brecon for Larceny and transported (for a dress valued at 3/-) in 1833 for 7 years - like most, she never returned. Her death cert in Australia gave Abergavenny as birthplace (not on Bap records there.) I am hoping somebody might check Parish Registers in Ludford to see if this John & Sarah WATERS are recorded there beyond 1815, eg baptising children, deaths etc; even an 1841 census entry could rule them out as my ancestors. Any assistance will certainly be sincerely appreciated. Thank you for reading this. Kind regards, Dawn (Tasmania, Aust.)
