    1. [ENG-SHROP] ALLEN & CHARLES about 1803 Burford
    2. Glenis House Sherwood
    3. Hi all, If anyone has suggestions on the following situation, I'd be very grateful. Thomas CHARLES was born about 1803 at 8 Old Jewry St in London to Elizabeth CHARLES -the father is unknown. The baptism for Thomas CHARLES is listed in the Shropshire Parish Register in Burford with this entry: 1804 Feb. 5 Thomas, natural s. Elizabeth CHARLES. We are not sure what happened to his mother, Elizabeth CHARLES, who was baptized in 1782 in Burford, and was the daughter of Peter & Martha CHARLES. Perhaps ELIZABETH eventually married? The CHARLES family resided in Shropshire Co. for many generations, especially in Burford, before & after the birth of Thomas in 1803. Thomas died there in 1873. My maternal grandfather was Elmer ALLEN and he born about 1894 was orphaned at an early age in the State of Idaho, United States. Recently my maternal uncle consented to do Y-DNA testing and we had an identical match to someone in Canada who is a descendant of Thomas CHARLES. This suggests the possibility that the father of Thomas CHARLES born in 1803 was a Mr. ALLEN. Does anyone know if there is significance to Thomas being born at 8 Old Jewry St in London - what was at that location? What records, if any, might reveal his father's name? There is an Elizabeth CHARLES, of about the right age (60 years) in the 1841 census for the township of Crickheath in the household of 25-year old Cadwaleder JONES but I don't know if she is the mother of Thomas CHARLES. Any ideas or guidance would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your consideration. Glenis House Sherwood Maine United States

    3. Hello Barry I don't have any personal knowledge of Hydraulic Bank but a Google search brought up the fact that a soldier who died in WWI lived there and this came up on the Shropshire War Memorial web site run by Neil Evans so I contacted Neil and he sent me this reply:- "Back in 2006 when I started my research, one of the first places I visited was Priorslee. I live in St. Georges, which neighbours Snedshill. I was fortunate enough to know a chap who was born 1911, in Snedshill. His whole family were native of Snedshill. He passed away in 2009. The name Hydraulic Bank intrigued me, as I'd never heard of it, despite being local myself. My friend informed me Hydraulic Bank was near Snedshill Iron Works and near the brow of the hill on Canongate. I've looked up a few old maps and records. It looks like there were around half a dozen houses that made up the Hydraulic Bank address. The maps I've looked at indicate that there was indeed a row of houses at the top of Canongate, opposite an old Methodist Chapel. Behind the Chapel there were a few buildings, around 4 structures, I suspect that they're linked with the industry in the area. This link to a Google map http://goo.gl/maps/j2yk shows a row of five modern buildings (ten houses?) running parallel with Canongate and is I believe the rough location of Hydraulic Bank. The whole area of what is now Telford has undergone massive redevelopment in the last fifty years. The name Hydraulic Bank, may not have come directly from one industrial location. In the immediate area, were some old blast furnaces, Snedshill Iron Works, brick works, and many mine shafts. It is likely however that the name came from the Priorslee works, which consisted of 4 blast furnaces, and a Steel Mill. The location of this complex was opposite Priorslee Church (St. Peter), which is effectively in Snedshill. Telford's, Central Park, Business site now occupies the site of the old steel works. In the mid to late 1800's the area grew rapidly in size. All of which was down to the Lilleshall Company. The Lilleshall Company owned the land in the area and built several mines, blast furnaces, and industrial works. The need for jobs drew people in and The Lilleshall Company built virtually all the terraced houses in the area, as well as the church at St. Georges, St. Georges school, and even an employees hospital. It's possible the company built the houses at Hydraulic Bank. A book, Lilleshall Company Limited: a history 1764-1964, was/is available in most of Telford libraries, it's an excellent book. I believe one of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums has a large amount of records from the company. I hope I've been of use." Using the information above from Neil I think I can see the Hydraulic Bank houses on the 1902 Ordnance Survey map 1:2,500 scale which you can easily buy as the Oakengates (South) 1901 map in the Godfrey Series, see www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk To locate the houses they are 4 inches from the top and 7 inches from the right of that map, opposite the Methodist Chapel (Primitive). Whilst the properties are not named on this particular map it may be worth looking at a later edition to see if they are named there. If the houses did belong to The Lilleshall Company then there is a large deposit of material at Shropshire Archives as well as the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Library. 3. Devastating and enough to bring tears to your eyes when watching. With all due respect for what has occurred, it is a warning to all genealogists to ensure that your years of long researching are not lost if a catastrophe hits your home. Make sure everything is backed up on disc and distributed to trusted relatives well away from where you live. Make sure that you have copied old photos (which obviously you may be the only one holding) and have again copied these to disk and left with other relatives. There will be many people in Queensland at the moment who have lost their life's possessions, almost in the blink of an eye. It is so sad, but again it is a warning to those of us who have so far been slack in copying and giving to close relatives, so please, do it now before it is too late. Would you want to lose all of it? Best regards Graham Melbourne Oz

    1. Re: [ENG-SHROP] Joseph PEARMAIN & Martha PAGETT m1793 Bridgnorth
    2. Peter Booth
    3. Margaret, That's not quite all you know. You know he was alive in 1815 when the last child was born, and you should be able to deduce that he was not of the parish as there are no Pearmain christenings in the St Leonards batches. You should also know Martha's parents and grandparents as she was of the parish and there are lots of Pagett BDM events for siblings and relatives. At a brief look, I could only find ten children. Others only have nine. I also note that many were christened at ages 4 & 5, which distorts the birth distribution. However, none of that helps with the origins of Joseph. There are about 10 listed possibilities on IGI all outside Shropshire, and we don't know how many are not recorded or destroyed. If you look at each of the 10, you will see some died or married others, so they can be eliminated. That will leave a short list. Then it's a case of deciding which one is more likely. I'd favour choosing the nearest county which looks Warwickshire. One there also has a mother Sarah, which is the name given to Joseph and Martha's 3rd child. But that's not conclusive. Perhaps someone has access to St Leonard's PR's and can lookup the 1793 marriage to see if their is an age or parish for Joseph or perhaps a relative as a witness. There are loads of researchers for Pearmian of Bridgnorth on mailing lists and message boards as well as submitted trees on Rootsweb and Ancestry. A number even have descendants of Joseph & Martha. They should be studied closely for any clues. I'd even look for other Pearmian individuals born around 1770. As a teacher of genealogy, I feel there's more that can be done. But it's very labour intensive with minimum rewards for each hour invested. It's up to you if you have the time and patience. Peter in Sydney

    3. Can anyone help myself and my friend in Utah to find Joseph Pearmain - we call him 'Top Joseph' the only information we have is his marriage to Martha Paget on the 22nd April 1793 at St. Leonard's Bridgnorth - Joseph was a Saddler and they lived on Raven Street, Bridgnorth, most of their lives - I have written to two Saddlers Guilds, but they have no trace of him - we would like to find his birth, and his death. Joseph and Martha had 12 children - Joseph (11th child) born 15th June 1812 - is our common ancestor. I would be thrilled to receive any information. Thank you. Margaret Horrocks.

I notice too the 1831 marriage is a user submission. So there's strong indication that the records for the particular parish don't exist on IGI. Susannah's birth year around 1812 is right at the change in format of the parish registers and always it's the outside pages that get most damage. But there are any number of reason for records to be unavailable. They could even be non-conformist. I think the only way to solve your problem is to get her death certificate of possibly a birth of one of her later children, which might show her maiden name.
