    3. 1st half of the 19th century, Mike. My ancestor Edward Lewis was a blacksmith living in the hamlet and I don't know if he had his own smithy, was employed locally or was, perhaps, employed at Attingham. His son was certainly a gardener at Attingham House in 1851. J.

    3. I heard on our local radio this morning, that the statue of John Robert Godley (the founder of ChCh), was founded in the Shropshire Coalbrookdale foundry. The statue was thrown off its plinth during the earthquake, revealing a bronze(?) time capsule together with a broken glass capsule. The Chch museum has gathered both together, and with latest techniques will carefully open both capsules to reveal their contents. The rolled up papers in the glass one, are water marked, but the museum scientist reckons that they can unwind them OK. 3. Hello everyone, I have a person who says they were born in Bridgemouth in Shropshire ca. 1886. I can't find it in the gazetteers nor old maps. Googling provides only a few results, a couple which indicate it is an address in use. It should be around the Wellington area near Shifnal (Wellington R.D.). Thanks Simon

A journeyman was a craftsman who had fully learned his trade and earned money but was not yet a master. To become a master, a journeyman had to submit a master work piece to a guild for judgment. If the work were deemed worthy, the journeyman would be admitted to the guild as a master. 3. Hello Simon My first thought was Bridgnorth but if it is in Wellington R.D. then that might not be correct. It is best to give us the name and age of the person and tell us where you found this. If on the census, which one and what is the reference so that we can look at the image. 3. Hi Susie, On the 1901 census for John (Snr) Watkins and Amelia Watkins, John (Jnr) is not listed in the household. His brother Arthur is listed with an occupation of Journeyman Cricker - possibly a mistake by the ennumerator and should read 'clicker'. Have you found Arthur on the 1911 census as this might confirm the connection to shoe/boot making? Best wishes, Sue > > On 1901 census i have my family of JOHN and AMELIA WATKINS in LUDLOW their Son JOHN gives his occupation as a Journeyman and another word that looks like Cricker > does anyone know what this means please > > Susie > researching WATKINS, ECCLESTON, WEAVER, BENTLEY, WILSON in Ludlow and Cardiff >

    3. There is a John S Watkins born abt 1861 in Ludlow on the 1901 census with his wife Matilda and family.  His occupation is shown as a Railway Signalman. Hope this helps, Sue > > On 1901 census i have my family of JOHN and AMELIA WATKINS in LUDLOW their Son JOHN gives his occupation as a Journeyman and another word that looks like Cricker > does anyone know what this means please > > Susie > researching WATKINS, ECCLESTON, WEAVER, BENTLEY, WILSON in Ludlow and Cardiff

    3. Hi Susie, I've found John Watkins senior (a widower) on the 1901 census but his son John does not appear in the household.  His son Arthur however does and is shown as a Journeyman Cricker as you rightly told us.  It is possible that it should be clicker as others have already advised. Have you searched for him on the 1911 census? Best wishes, Sue > > On 1901 census i have my family of JOHN and AMELIA WATKINS in LUDLOW their Son JOHN gives his occupation as a Journeyman and another word that looks like Cricker > does anyone know what this means please > > Susie > researching WATKINS, ECCLESTON, WEAVER, BENTLEY, WILSON in Ludlow and Cardiff
