    3. Hello Carol I presume your Henry WYKE was born at Leaton (not Leighton) which is a hamlet about one mile south west of Wrockwardine which is presumably where he would have been baptised. Just to clarify this point we do have a Leighton parish in Shropshire, about four miles south of Wrockwardine and we also have another Leaton about four miles north west of Shrewsbury. This latter Leaton (near Bomere Heath) did not become a parish until 1859/60. 1. ERROR shd be : 1797 /Humphrey LLOYD, Slater, x4 grandfather,
    2. Hello All, Firstly thanks to Richard in NZ, Mike, and Judy for sending me a response. Judy, I was fascinated to read of the slate descriptions, methods of use. Mike, for your info about the National Slate Museum Richard, for the 1851 census info. In reviewing my original letter, I see that I have made a horrible error with the date of Humphrey & Elizabeth's marriage. NOT, 1897, SHOULD be 1797. I do apologize to everyone for any inconvenience this has caused, So sorry, Regards, Marjorie

    3. Hello With regard to the occupation of 'Slater' I would suggest that this probably refers to a person who puts slates on a roof and therefore moves around to where houses were being built rather than a person who splits slate in a quarry for later use by the Slater. If anyone wants to see how slates are split then they can see it being done at the National Slate Museum, Llanberis, see http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/slate/ where there is a photograph of someone splitting slate on the front page. 3. Have you ever taken a sliced loaf out of the freezer and then tried to split off a single slice? That is the best analogy I can think of for making slates. About 35 years ago I was taken to see the men splitting slates, somewhere up a hillside in Wales. They used hand tools to separate the layers and create ever thinner slices. It would seem reasonable to assume that the same process was used 70 or 80 years before and when you think of the nature of slate it makes sense. Transporting uncut slate would be costly and lead to a lot of breakages. When slates are transported in a lorry or are placed ready for roofing they are stacked very carefully on their ends, so that the weight on each is minimised and spread over the surface, and they support each other. So I think your slater would be doing what a slater does today ie working on roofs using ready cut slates delivered to the site. Where would he work? There would have been a demand for slaters in any area where slate roofs were traditional and also for selected buildings over a wider area. Slate roofs have to be maintained and sometimes completely replaced - not necessarily with new slates, the old ones will be taken off, stacked and then replaced. So he would not have to be working all the time on new buildings. As a rule of thumb, slates are predominant in the north and north west and in industrial districts and less common in southern rural areas where clay tiles and even thatch are predominant. 1. looking for Thomas Dugan in Wellington 1850's or 1860's
    2. hi, Would someone with access to census records be able to look for a Thomas Dugan in the 1861 or 1851 Wellington census? A while back, some nice people on this list helped me to find Owen Dugan and his wife, Bridget Fallon, in the 1861 and 1871 Wellington census. They were both from Galway. Just yesterday, I was able to get over to my local Family History Center where I had ordered the parish register film for Saint Patrick's RC church in Wellington. I got lucky right away and found Owen and Bridget's marriage in October of 1860. The record says that Owen's father was Thoma. I assume that's Latinized Thomas. So, I'm hoping to find a Thomas Dugan in Wellington around that time. One thing of interest: I found five or six Dugan records on that film roll. Each time, the name was spelled differently, although the family was the same. There was Dugan, Duggan, Duggin, Doogan and Doughan. Very creative. I'm afraid a thorough search would have to include these variants. Thanks, John F

    1. Humphrey LLOYD, Slater, x4 grandfather
    2. Good Morning, List, I hope that someone may be able to uncover Humphrey LLOYD'S roots. I am not having much luck. Humphrey LLOYD married Elizabeth BARKLEY by bond of GBP 500 and also a license in Aug 1897, in Ellesmere. On most of their 8 children's birth records he is a SLATER. They born in a few various places, Duddleston, Shrewsbury, Colcham, Castle Foregate. Would a SLATER have to keep moving in order to work? Work where? A quarry? a mine, just cut and install slate for roofs? Might he have been born in neighboring Wales and learned the trade there? I welcome any ideas, theories any bits at all. I cannot find a birth, a death or any census for this family. I do not have access to the 1841. I do have access to all other census, and am certainly willing to trade info and precious time. Regards, Marjorie Lloyd, Nevada, USA

    3. Since you are in the UK why not phone up the local record office? If you have the date the photocopies shouldn't cost more than a couple of quid. You usually have to sign a copyright form as well. Judy On 28 Mar 2006, at 22:53, Wendy Lewis wrote: > Big Ask, I know. 3. Whilst hanging around waiting for my son to finish youth club.....and with nothing in the car to read other than the road map I got searching!!... There is a place called Aston which is located right by the Trent river near Stone in Staffordshire. It's very close to the border and might be worth a look! From genuki Hilderstone quarter, forms the eastern side of Stone parish, and includes the following villages and hamlets; Little Aston, two miles S; Burston, three and a half miles SSE; Stoke, one mile SE; Fulford, Saverley-Green, and Crossgate, from five to seven miles NE; Shapley Green and Hilderstone, four and a half miles ENE; and Normacot, six and a half miles N of Stone. Little Aston is a hamlet and manor, on the SW side of the Trent, opposite to Stone, of which Viscount St Vincent is lord of the manor and principal owner. Aston Hall, a large moated mansion, was the property of the late Sir James Simeon, and was bequeathed to a Roman Catholic community, now consisting of the Rev Father Superior Gaudentius and a few monks. Normacot, at the north end of the parish, adjoins Blurton, and the large pottery town of Longton. It includes Mear Lane, Mear Heath, Mear Furnaces, and many neat houses, some of which are occupied by china and earthenware manufacturers. A new suburb, called Dre! sden, is being built here. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Stone/ Good luck!
