    3. Janice, This has cropped up before and it is caused by WEM also being the Chapman Code for Westmeath, Ireland like SAL is for Shropshire, so when Ancestry enter it into their database it picks up Wem and corrects it, incorrectly in this case, to Westmeath. Hi Louise Yes I have tried looking to see if he is with brothers and sisters. Cant find his sister Jane b. 1826 or sister Elizabeth b. 1837 Can find all the others that I mentioned all living in Wolverhampton. Strange, but the numerator has Wem down as being Westmeath on some of the 1851/61 census.. Just cant find them at all....thank you for helping me kind regards Janice Researching: HAMPSON, STYCHE, GLADWIN, ABBOTT, ESBERGER, HOLLINGWORTH, HEMMINGWAY, CRESSWELL, KING, MATHER, ECKERSLEY, GOODALL, ROBINSON, ARAM, GEE, GRAFTON ==== ENG-SHROPSHIRE-PLUS Mailing List ==== DO NOT send 'Unsubscribe' requests to the list. 2. Hi Anouska Thank you so much for your interest. Henry HAMPSON/HAMSON was in Wolverhampton in 1871, Yorkshire in 1881, Lancashire 1891, Nottinghamshire in 1901. Died in 1917. Married in Oswestry 1865 to Eliza GRAFTON who was from Wolverhampton. most of Henry's brothers and sisters went to Wolves during the 1850's they married there. Henry parents died we believe in 1840's. Williams his farther died in 1846. We are not sure about Mum Jane/Jain. She may have re-married.... I hope im not being a nuisance Kind regards janice

    2. Michael J Hulme
    3. Hello Keith As a first step I would suggest you try to find your ancestor in the Tithe Apportionment from around the 1840's which will hopefully tell you whether the land was actually owned or rented. The tithe also includes a map with each plot numbered so you can be sure which pieces of land were included. The Land Tax (generally) pre-dates the Tithe so it can be useful going from one to the other but the main problem is that virtually all the Shropshire Land Tax documents were destroyed about the time of WWII although there is a very limited set in The National Archives at Kew. If you happen to be looking for somewhere else, like Cheshire, then they have a good set of Land Tax documents. Dear Keith, I suppose you could have a look at the (much later I know) Return of Owners of Land published 1873, to see if the his/her land was still in the same name? You don't give a name, but I have added a few of them to my website at _www.geocities.com/fountalnpen/moreton.html_ (http://www.geocities.com/fountalnpen/moreton.html) I have included a section 'A Little Light Reading' on the background to the Return, which may give you a few clues as to where to go next, if 'your' name isn't there. Hope that helps. Penny
