    1. BBC TV showing 1920's colour movie film
    2. Michael J Hulme
    3. Hello Everyone The BBC are broadcasting a series of three one hour programmes showing colour movie footage which was filmed in the 1920's by Claude Friese-Greene. The first program, which starts at Lands End in the south west of England, was on Tuesday 18 April and can still be seen by following this link:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo/programmes/?id=friese_greene Unfortunately the first programme will be removed from the web site during Tuesday 25 April, presumably to be replaced by the second programme. The second programme due to be screened in the UK on Tuesday 25 April will almost certainly travel through part of Shropshire. Any of you who want to see what the land of your UK ancestors looked like in the 1920's will really enjoy this. Sorry this message is so late in the day, I have only just watched the first programme myself. Mike Shropshire, UK

    2. Hi all. I have a very, very good book here called "The Great Mortality" about the black death, how it was spread and what the sourse was, and what set up Europe and England for a great disaster. So far the book as been very informative but it says something that confuses me. It says there was a great climate change in 1316. People were starving and yes, some were eating flesh. But it says the corn crop failed. Did England have corn before 1492? Renee Waring

Hello Laurie I fond this on the British Vital Records Disks, though it may give you a clue as to where the name Rubini came from. It was the only one on the disks out of all of England. RUBINI, Marx Engels Turati Christening Gender: Male Birth Date: 14 Oct 1899 Christening Date: 14 May 1899 Recorded in: Westminster, London, England Collection: Soho, St Anne Father: January RUBINI Mother: Emily Source: FHL Film 1468920 Dates: 1881 - 1925 None on the IGI. It's probable that Joseph was given that second name in honour of Giovanni Battista Rubini the Italian tenor of the time. So, maybe not a relative's name handed down. Fascinating though! Cheers Graham Melbourne Oz

Marriage, Stoke Upon Tern, Shropshire, 30 Jan 1806, Samuel Brayn and Mary Whitfield. SUT is about eight miles north-west of Chetwynd. Seems to fit pretty much. Check it out. Cheers Graham

    3. Hi John, I could not find anything on the Ancestry 1901 for any of them, However on the 1901Online I can see, Jessie M Sands aged 1, Alfred Sands aged 9mths, Annie E Sands aged 4, All Born Marbury, and living Marbury with Quoisley, not far from Whitchuch ?? All the ages seem to fit, but I cannot find trace of them on Ancestry (not to be cheated) A further search on the 1901Online searching Sands, Marbury shows, William Sands 38 Wem Shropshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley Roadman Hannah Sands 42 Prees Shropshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley Edward Sands 15 Marbury Cheshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley Agricultural Labourer On Farm John Sands 10 Marbury Cheshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley May J Sands 8 Marbury Cheshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley Annie E Sands 4 Marbury Cheshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley Jessie M Sands 1 Marbury Cheshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley Alfred Sands 9m Marbury Cheshire Cheshire Marbury With Guoisley Hope that helps Ken > I wonder if SKS would do a look-up for me, please? > > Several years ago I trawled through the GRO on fiche looking for specific > people, and I noted down several other BDM which I am now trying to match > with the 1901 census extracts that I made when that came out on fiche. > There > appears to be a family that I missed as I cannot identify the following > births registered in Whitchurch, SAL with the surname SANDS: > > Q1 1893 Mary Jane > Q2 1894 William > Q3 1896 Annie Elizabeth > Q3 1899 Jessie May > Q3 1900 Alfred

    3. Hello John I have found most of the family with a bit of difficulty. Fortunately Ancestry gave me the clue on one screen that I looked at where they listed three people (not yours) as SANDS or LANDS. Having got nowhere searching SANDS I decided to try LANDS and came up with RG.13/2556 folio 63 page 6 which is at Marbury in Cheshire which is 3 miles NNE of Whitchurch. I will e-mail you a link off list. 3. Hi list I wonder if SKS would do a look-up for me, please? Several years ago I trawled through the GRO on fiche looking for specific people, and I noted down several other BDM which I am now trying to match with the 1901 census extracts that I made when that came out on fiche. There appears to be a family that I missed as I cannot identify the following births registered in Whitchurch, SAL with the surname SANDS: Q1 1893 Mary Jane Q2 1894 William Q3 1896 Annie Elizabeth Q3 1899 Jessie May Q3 1900 Alfred [There are also Q3 1903 Maggie and Q3 1904 Elizabeth but obviously too late for census.] I understand that the Whitchurch registration district covered the parishes of Whitchurch and Ightfield, SAL; Iscoyd FLN and 23 parishes in CHS. I should be very grateful for any help. Regards John

    3. Hello to Laurie in Oz, Sort of parallel info of which you may already be aware: 1863 directory: J. Skitt, New Town, Whitchurch. Poulterer. Caution also a James Skit of Ditherington, Shrewsbury, in 1870 directory. Veterinary surgeon. Its interesting that an IGI possible christening for Charlotte Isabella spells the surname as Skett. Cheers Jo in Shropshire.

    3. Hi Maria I see your predicament. On the Free BMD there are 47 John Richards marrying a Mary between March 1855 and Dec 1857. None of them, as I recall, within Shropshire. Nothing much on the British Vital Records either, and of course the IGI shows a vast array of couples who probably don't fit. Some couples who might fit are those married in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, etc. close by. But then, no point ignoring the fact that if John was intending to come to Australia he might have gone up to Liverpool to ship off as was the intention of many Shropshire folk and met his Mary there, or even down to London and married there! Again, there are some in the Free BMD and the IGI who might fit at or around 1856 in both areas. I am also wondering if on the Australian death certificate the 14 years of marriage might have been misinterpreted or miswritten? Considering the age of John, born 1812, could it be that the marriage length might have been 24 years and not 14? Though I expect you could work that out to your satisfaction by checking on the children's ages at the time of Mary's death. Anyway, just a thought. Cheers Graham Melbourne.
