    3. I have a brick wall I want to break down. In the 1851 census I have the following HO/07/989 page 14 Madeley Wood Sarah POTTS and Andrew POTTS plus Elizabeth DELVES Aunt, widow, 81, pauper. Andrew would have been born 1811 and Sarah 1818.They were living Madeley Wood area. Has anyone got this couple in their tree...........I am trying to find out what Elizabeth DELVES maiden name is. I have never been able to find her marriage to Thomas DELVES. So by a matter of elimination I should be able to do so by this couple as long as she was a REAL aunt. 3. You may well ask Graham how I have two sets of witnesses.. Think I must have somehow entered wrong ones into FTM and now need to sort out which names are right. Not sure how I made the mistake, obviously not as efficient as I should be. Sandi -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. I have a marriage of William Edwards and Hannah Stedman in 27 November 1828 at Madeley St Michaels. I appear to have 2 different sets of witnesses. Does anyone have access to the records who could confirm who the witnesses were? Sandi -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Hi Louise Yes, must admit it was an eye-opener. Here's a few more thoughts on the matter. (Similar thoughts posted to the Clwyd list). Must admit it was not all that easy at first, as one needs an ordnance map in front of one to work out the grids, but once you have done that you can put your selected house or any building picture on the website for all to look at for posterity. Just needs a little patience. And then you can add more and more of your own photos and the copyright of them stays with you. Also, you can add in connections so that you can be personally contacted. Terrific idea. PS. Ordnance maps for your local district can usually be obtained through your local newsagent or bookseller. The Landranger series is excellent. I have ten of these covering various districts, but the most important to me are Landranger 126 Shrewsbury & surrounding area, and Landranger 117 Chester, Wrexham & surrounding area, of course not forgetting one of the newer ones Explorer 256, Wrexham/Wrecsam & Llangollen. I rarely see reference to these maps on the Shropshire list and find it difficult to understand why more researchers do not obtain these maps for they are full of vital detail, even to the extent of naming local farms, etc. You have only to look at the Llangollen/Llantysilio district, for instance, and it opens up a new world with mountain and hill contours, etc. You can certainly see your ancestors huffing & puffing up and down the hills perhaps with or without their one horse and cart on their way to market, or...... (Church or chapel on Sundays, more likely no doubt!). Phew, I'm tired already. Cheers Graham

    3. Hi Graham, Well done! I have been having a lot of fun with this site over the last days, not only Shropshire but Devon and Cornwall. I have OS maps for all the areas my family lived. I have also taken lots of photos on my travels - houses, countryside, etc. If one submits a photo for a certain grid which is already represented, do they show both, or select the first, or the best one? Must admit it is not real easy as you need an ordnance map at hand to be able to work out the grids, but I did it after sticking with it for some time. Check out "Weston House, Gresford." 3. Hello Janice If you go to the Shropshire Archives web site at http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf then click on Shropshire Archives Online Catalogue near the bottom of the page. When the next window comes up enter the two words "school wem" (without the quotes) and just below in the word options click the middle dot to select 'And'. Click the search button and hopefully you will be presented with 13 records to look at. 3. Hello Janice, The 1844 Directory for Wem, Prees & Neighbours, has ten entries under Academies & Schools. Page 49. Of these one for Prees and one for Quinabrook. Of the remaining included are : British School, Grammar School, Infants' School, National School. Rest sound like being private schoolmasters/mistresses. Jo. Shropshire UK.
