The permit, issued by Shropshire Archives, will cost £5.00 per day or £30.00 per annum. Apparently such a charge is quite common in other similar facilities. My g-g-grandfather, John Stevens is listed in Derby census records of 1841,1851,1861 as being born in Newport, Sallop. He married Harriett Amesbury in 1832 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, and at least one child was born in Hereford, the younger ones born in Derby. I need help on his family, any exact date and place of birth [or Christianing], and his parents, brothers and sisters. And earlier family also. Maybe where I should look also. Thanks in advance. -- E. Alvin Gerhardt 139 Onks Lane Jonesborough TN 37659-7350
Hello June I can accept that the three children, Mary, Hannah and Charlotte, are probably the same people in both census entries but there is a problem with the adults. In the 1841 census for Bitterley (not Butterley) (HO.107/917/1 folio 27 page 4) I think William is aged 50 (that means 50-54) not 30 and Mary is aged 40 (which means 40-44). In the 1851 census (HO.107/1985 folio 266 page 16) Mary is aged 64 which is a twenty year difference not a ten year difference as it should be if they are the same person. I can't explain this. If you look at FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com there is a Death for a William MARSTON in the March quarter of 1846 in the Ludlow Registration District who may, or MAY NOT, be the person in the 1841 census entry. The parish of Farlow was in the county of Herefordshire until October 1844 when it was transferred to Shropshire. You also need to remember that census enumeration Districts can often cross county boundaries because they were based on the Poor Law boundaries. Could someone please help me with a query. In the 1851 census for Farlow, Stottesdon Registration district Cleobury Mortimer - I have the following entry: John Marston, 70, day labourer, born Shrophsire Mary, wife, born Shropshire Mary, daughter, unmarried, 23, born Stanton Lacy Hannah, daughter, unmarried, 18, born Stanton Lacy Charlotte, unmarried, 16, born Stanton Lacy Susan, grandaughter, 1, born Herefordshire (Farlow?) John, grandson, 7 months, born Herefordshire The 1841 census for Butterby (?) shows the following (a note at the bottom of the page says 'detached and and now with Stanton Lacy) William Marston, 30 Mary Marston, 40 Mary Marston 12 Elizabeth Marston 10 Hannah Marston, 8 Charlotte Marston 6 I am sure that the Mary, Hannah and Charlotte are the same in both census and I am wondering if it would seem possible that Mary's first husband died and she then married someone else by the same name. My interest is in the granddaughter Susan in the 1851 census as I believe that she is my 2nd great grandmother. Thank you June

Just for starters, is Thomas Palin senior, the one in 1881 Butcher, born Wombridge, Shropshire? Has a 19 year old daughter living at home. Residing Wellington. Freebmd gives person called Thomas Palin, born in March 1885 quarter, registered Wellington. Trade directory gives a Thomas Palin, butcher, Oakengates, Wellington, for 1870. Also T.Palin, Butcher, for an earlier edition. Just how much info have you? Not suggesting any of these yours but maybe worth a try. Jo.Shropshire.

Mail is getting through ihug.co.nz OK, and I'm on the heaviest filter. !! $10/month for dial up !! Richard. --------------------- Thank you to everyone who helped me sort this out. Xtra.co.nz in all their wisdom decided that Rootsweb.com was spam and blocked them, so if anyone has contact with any other listers in NZ - best to email them and tell them to phone xtra. I have had to have the spam filter totally unblocked in order to get my Rootsweb emails, which means that I am now also flooded with rubbish. Never mind. I will finish this email and then send another one about my research Cheers Justine www.fruitnfire.co.nz Innovative creators of fine foods for the international table -----Original Message----- From: Bob Millman [mailto:repmill@bigpond.net.au] Sent: Monday, 5 June 2006 5:29 p.m. To: 'Stan & Justine' Subject: RE: [ENG-SHROP] FROM NEW ZEALAND Justine Your emails are getting through to the list. After a VERY long absence I find I have a 5 minute block of time in which to pick up my family tree again. Names: VAUGHAN, Llandrinio, Ellesmere, Criggion, Crickheath, Tirymynech, Daywell GRIFFITHS, Llandrinio - Trederwen, Garth WHITTINGHAM, Guilsfield, Llandrinio, Alberbury BROWNE, Alberbury FURMSTON and variations, Ellesmere and surrounding areas Related names: Barret, Tannat, Pryce/Price, Cromwell, Disborough Unfortunately my ageing computer keeps spitting the dummy on me and losing all my info. YES I DID BACK UP - but this time it won't even read the disc, so until my new 2006 FTM arrives I can't even look at my data, I am purely going off memory here. However in the meanwhile, I can offer a small amount of look ups from a book I have Montgomeryshire Pleadings in the Court of Chancery 1558 - 1714 This book has been the only means I have had of linking from Edward Vaughan 1732 Ellesmere to Edward Vaughan c.1640 Tirymynech and Trederwen. What it has is the basis of each court case with a reference number whereby you can then order the copy of the court case from the British Museum and spend hours trying to read it in the hope that it will give some more gleanings.
