In the parish of Uffington or Uppington. > The > cause of death shows that he accidentally drowned while ? in waters of the > River Severn. > Could the following article in the Bridgnorth Journal dated 23 July 1921 be referring to the drowning. Quote; "Shrewsbury. Recognition of a man's bravery - There has been a pleasing sequel to the tragic occurrence in the Severn at Shrewsbury, when two young airmen lost their lives. It will be remembered one went down in sixteen feet of water, and the other lost his life in attempting a rescue, while both bodies were recovered by Mr Richard Forgham, of St. Michael's Street, who dived repeatedly until success attended his efforts. At the Sentinel Sports on Saturday he was presented with a silver wrist watch, with the inscription:- "Richard Forgham, Esq, from the Sentinel Sports Club. A little memento of a big act, July 1921." Mr Forgham served his apprenticeship with the Sentinel and is still employed at Harlescott." End quote. Unfortunately I couldn't find any mention of the actual accident in the preceding issues. Hope it helps, Gwynne Transcribing the Bridgnorth town census. http://www.chadwickg.freeserve.co.uk

    3. Hello Carl They certainly didn't want to be found in the 1891 and 1901 census. I tried searching by surname without forename(s) and also forename without surname but I couldn't see them. Have you considered emigration? Of course they may have just managed to avoid the enumerator or the writing is so difficult that they don't come up in the index. If you don't have access to Ancestry.co.uk on the Internet at home try your local library - more and more now have access. Do also try the alternative sites which have the 1891 and 1901 censuses, one of them might have them indexed. 1. Barrett-Pope(?)
    2. Looking for leads as usual-- A family notebook with entries from 1840 to at least 1855 has the note - "Grandmother Ann BARRETT nee [probably] POPE'. Am not sure of the generation of Ann as a father and his daughter both wrote in book. In my line there is an Ann BARRETT marrying a John BILLINGTON in 1819 at Shrewsbury. Any leads on an Ann POPE marrying a Barrett and having a child Ann born ca 1790 or an Ann Pope having a first marriage to a BARRETT and then my information being on a second marriage? I have an 1863 letter naming a Dr. Barrett -- probably of the Shrewsbury area -- but no further information. I have looked on Ancesty and IGI but not figured anything out. Any leads will be appreciated! Anne in Aurora IL

    3. Hello Angela You are certainly looking at Uffington rather than Uppington if it was near the River Severn and I would guess that the actual place was probably Pimley Rough. Go to the Old Maps web site at www.old-maps.co.uk then put the co-ordinates *351212,314439* (exactly as written here) at top left and click Co-ordinate then Search. A small area of mapping from 1888 will come up on screen. Click Enlarged View at the bottom of the screen to getter a better image to save and print. This location is on the north eastern outskirts of Shrewsbury so it is a Shrewsbury paper you need to look at, although I realise that might be difficult from Switzerland. 2. Angie Kemp
    3. Hello everybody I am new to this list and have joined in the hope that you may be able to assist in finding out more information about the drowning of my grandfather's brother Alfred ASHBY. He was born in East London around 1902, and was in the Royal Air Force when he died aged 19. I don't know if he was living in the area at the time or just visiting. His death certificate shows that he died on 13 July 1921 in the River Severn at P? Rough? In the parish of Uffington or Uppington. The cause of death shows that he accidentally drowned while ? in waters of the River Severn. I thought that perhaps this may have been reported in a local newspaper at the time or perhaps someone may recall such a story from a member of their family, though I realise it was a long time ago. Any assistance you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Regards Angela
