Hmmmmm, yes, that is a difficult one! There's no easy way of telling if one Anne died and John married another Anne but I would think there's a very good chance that he did. Do you know if there are children being baptised too close together to be just from one couple? I'm not sure if the witnesses will be any assistance. Sometimes they are, sometimes not. > I have had "look ups" completed for me in Stafforshire and thought there > may be someone on this list who also do professional research. I think Graham's suggestion of getting hold of the parish registers through your local LDS FHC is probably your answer. It'd probably cost you a lot less than it would to employ a professional researcher. -- Charani (UK)

    3. Dear Mike (or anyone else with Bishop's Castle area interests/knowledge) My great grandfather Charles Pugh was born at Clunbury in 1850, but the family was at Lydbury North in the 1851 census. Then in subsequent censuses in Bishop's Castle. Charles himself married Mary Davies of Ruyton and worked as an agricultural labourer right across Shropshire and as far as Brewood in Staffordshire in the 1881 census - so I am glad on computer indexes otherwise I would not have found him. His parents were Thomas Pugh probably born in Llandyssil, Mont about 1802. His mother appears to be Sarah Humphries born about 1813 in Llanllwchaiarn, Mont and may have married at Aberhafesp, Mont. Thomas appears to have disappeared from the records between 1861 and 1871. Sarah is in the Bishop's Castle censuses up to 1881 when she was listed as a pauper. I have identified a number of possible children, but am concerned that some are misidentified. The names are: Sarah; Thomas; Elizabeth; Jane; Mary; Charles (himself); William (according to my father but haven't found him in records). I started my family history research about 30 years ago, but it's taken me till this summer with the aid of internet research to find Charles birthplace (one census has him at Cleobury North) and identify his parents. Any help/advice would be gratefully received. Connection with an ancient gatein Oswestry Hi Graham, I suppose that that was probably the best way of indicating the location of the gaol. Quite convenient really next to a major gateway easy to get prisoners to from out of town. What really interests me is how the justice system has changed in the last 200-300 years in this country, from severe punishment of offenders regardless of the offence to an almost supporting attitude, it seems, for crime and an almost total disregard for the victims of crime.Perhaps I am getting too cynical in my old age! I must try and find the Corporation prisoners books to cast a light on how the punishment system worked in the 1700s in Oswestry and see if I can find surnames that might, one day, be of interest to family historians. Have been to Canada this year Australia next stop. Will bring pictures of the "Green Inn". 3. If you know the date, even roughly, you may well not need a researcher. You will only be charged for any copies and postage. Try emailing the record office first. I have found in the past they have even gone through parish records and picked out other records for my family without even being asked. Apart from that, going back to Uffington parish records which can be obtained through the LDS folk on microfilm, and some of the parishes close by and checking their records out might reveal the marriage. This is never easy. You have to check them out one by one unless you have found the marriage on the IGI. It can sometimes be a very tedious business, but if you are dedicated, say no more. Whilst following two links unlikely to be what you are after, worth looking at for a wider picture. http://www.broseley.org.uk/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broseley Then there is Genuki for Shropshire, but not much on Broseley. After recently finding far more of my "disappeared" relatives in Australia than I thought, know how hard it is to move to another country, with limited time to chase things up. Many people on the Shropshire list have directories, guess years about 1840s to 1942 very approximately, though of course very different to the censuses. Jo. Shropshire. Very mild.
