There are a number of Stanton's in Shropshire, and the nearest one to Market Drayton is Stanton upon Hine Heath, which is approx eight miles south-west. However, I must ask how you came to the conclusion that Market Drayton may have been John Bate's birthplace or christening place? Again, is it possible that the name of William Blagg's farm was Stanton? One needs to pick out some more definite possibilities from the newspaper article if this is possible. There are also towns not all that far away named Stanton Long (or Long Stanton) Clee Stanton, Stanton Lacey. Again, where was the trial conducted? If it was Market Drayton then perhaps Stanton upon Hine Heath is the place you require re. Blaggs. The IGI does not come up with many Blagg folks, but there are a couple christened/married etc. at Stanton upon Nine Heath. Also Whitchurch, which is a bit far north. There is also a Stanton in Staffordshire, a bit far across - about 17 miles east of Stoke-on-Trent. Over to you Cheers Graham Melbourne Oz

    3. Hello Greg Your research has been made more difficult because John BATES appears to have been born in the County of Shropshire but committed his offence in the County of Staffordshire. As a general rule records for the two counties are kept within each county so you need to pursue his birth/baptism in Shropshire and his offence/trial in Staffordshire. I would suggest you post a similar message on the Staffordshire Mailing List at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/STAFFORDSHIRE.html asking specifically for help and information relating to the place where the offence took place and what records are available in Staffordshire relating to the trial. As you pick up small pieces of information you may be able to ask more specific questions and then get better answers. 1. Re: [ENG-SHROP] Sankey - Haytons Bent, Stanton Lacy
    2. Eveline Clarke
    3. Hi Charles I have only seriously started looking at the Sankeys in Shopshire for just a few days 15th September actually. The reason being that for years I have been trying to find the marriage of my Grandfather to Emily Sankey (his second wife - I am descended from his first wife), However, family lore is that his first wife was a first cousin (yes I have "proven" that), the story goes on that when he married again it was to another cousin. After searching for several years, freeBMD updated and there about 3 weeks ago, I found it and immediately sent for the certificate which arrived on 15th Sept. Emily was born 1867 (I thought that she was about that year from her death certificate, but knowing she was 45 when she married Granddad, I thought she was a widow and was looking for any other name but that, I was quite shocked to read Spinster and that her father Edwin was a Woodsman. I looked on Family search for Emily Sankey born 1867 father Edwin and found them. I agree with what you say his death, it does say aged 69 which agrees with the early censuses. Regarding his birth, the censuses. The 41 says born 1836, the 51 says 1837, I thought I had the 1861 but cannot find it now. The 1871 says he was born 1840, the 1881 says age 41 which makes it 1840. I thought I had the 1891 as well (these two lost ones must be together somewhere). The 1901 is really strange, that says 75 but that is obviously incorrect. It also says that Caroline is 57 which is also incorrect - so much for the 1841 being out by up to 5 years but the others being correct. That is why I put between 36 and 41 although I agree with you 1836 seems the most likely. No I don't have the birth of Thomas except for the census age which in 1861 was 1908 and in 1871 it was 1810. I thought this might be on IGI as the records stop at 1812, but no, it wasn't. Another contact I have but him and his wife Sarah born at Bridgenorth. The 1861 says Mary ????? (can't read the surname) mother in law born Stoke St Milborough. However in 1851, there is a Mary Linnaker staying with them put as a lodger, but about the right age to be Sarah's mother, so I wondered if the bit I couldn't read was Linacre (different spelling) but that might be me WANTING it to that, I am not at all sure. Sarah was still alive age 73 and living with son Shadrack in 1881. Edwin married Caroline Lewis in 1866 registered at Ludlow, so probably married Stanton Lacy. In the 1851 census Caroline was age 6 born Stanton Lacy. Her father was Samuel Lewis born Wistanstow age 52 her mother Margaret age 53 born Stanton Lacy and all the children born Stanton Lacy. I have not found the marriage, but the married daughter was aged 19. However, there was also a Lewis grandchild staying with them, so there must be another son old enough to have a 2 year old son. So probably a bit older than his sister. So I would think they amrried c 1930ish. Again, I have not found the marriage. I think that is just about all I have found so far. Except to say there were 3 Samuel Lewis' born at Winstanstow c 1800. The one born 1799 fits in with Samuel's age on the census. There was one born 1800, but I think he must have died as there is another born to the same parents just 13 months later. As an educated guess, I would say the earlier Samuel was Caroline's father, but of course that needs to be "proven". I would be interested in hearing how you are related to these Sankeys. I have still not fitted Emily in as related to Grandad ergo, my mother and myself and I would love to "prove" or "disprove" this fact. My great grandparents names were Watts, Kington and Woodward, so if Grandad was a first cousin, those names should come in somewhere. I thought I had all his cousins marriages, but find I am about 3 short. My cousin also heard the same story from her mother, so I think there must be a grain of truth somewhere. I think now that you have all my research, which isn't bad for 5 days work, but I have come to a full stop. If you can throw any light on the subject I would be absolutely delighted. Hopefully, someone will reply to my query and if they reply off-list, I will let you know the result. 3. Hi I am hoping someone would be able to do a look-up for me in the parish records for Stanton Lacy. On IGI the records end in1812. I am interested in Edwin Sankey's baptism and also the baptism of his daughter Emily. Edwin was according to the censuses born anytime between 1836 and 1841 and he states born Stanton Lacy. When he died in 1906 his age was given as 69. I do have Edwin's censuses, but it would be nice to know his exact age. Emily would have been born c 1867 as she was aged 45 when she married in 1912 Edwin's father Thomas is also born Stanton Lacy he would have been born c 1811, but is not on the Stanton Lacy records on IGI. I would appreciate any help that could be given. Regards Eveline

    1. [ENG-SHROP] John Bates Convict
    2. Greg Bugden
    3. Hello Listers this is my first Shropshire posting. I am an Australian researching my convict ancestor JOHN BATES, who was a 'native of Shropshire' and a 'farmersman' according to the convict records I have investigated. I have received from your archives at Stoke-on-Trent a copy of the newspaper account of his trial (Staffordshire Advertiser 1825). He was found guilty of "breaking open and entering the dwelling house of William Blagg" at STANTON on the 23 July 1825, when he was 18 years old (ie born c.1807). John Bates was a 'servant' of Blagg at the time and the article says that John Bates' father had a house (nearby I suppose) which was searched for evidence. The article also says that John had a 'little brother' for whom a 'pinafore' was ordered made from some cloth stolen from Blagg's house. I would like establish John's family, and hoped the Newspaper account of the trial might help me do this. The IGI says there was a John Bates who was baptised at Market Drayton 11 Jan 1807. This could be my John Bates. The Parents named are Thomas and Hanna Bates, also of Market Drayton. They had other children, including young sons (Isaac and Abraham) who would have been infants/toddlers at the time of the trial: so possibly the "Little Brother" mentioned above for whom a pinafore was ordered. Does anyone else research BATES families in this area? Can suggestions be offered about confirming his family and background or perhaps providing details about the said William Blagg and his house/farm at Stanton? Are Market Drayton and Stanton near to each other? Any scrap of information will be appreciated, since there are no further Australian records left for me to pursue. Cheers Greg
