I have traced my GGGrandfather (David Jones) and found that he died in the Oswestry Cottage Hospital after a railway accident on GWR line. The inquest was on 16 April 1889 and he had been living in Whittington. The death certificate states that he lived for 31 days after the accident, so I assume the accident must have been early in march. Could anyone suggest sources (Newspaper, GWR records, etc) where I may be able to find more details, preferrably on-line sources since I do not live locally. If you look on the Shropshire List at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/ENG-SHROPSHIRE-PLUS/2008-09 you will see your thread is now split into two different places making it difficult for other readers to follow. Assize Courts were organised in "Circuits" and both Shropshire and Staffordshire were in the Oxford Circuit but as far as I know an offence would always have been tried in the same county that it took place so on that basis the crime must have been in Staffordshire. The centre of Market Drayton is only one mile from the county boundary with Staffordshire and Ashley is only another four miles (less than two hours walk in total) so your man could easily live in Market Drayton and walk to Ashley. I wonder if the place name of his employer has been printed incorrectly because there is no Stanton close enough to fit the circumstances but whilst looking at the map a few moments ago I noticed a place called 'Standon' in Staffordshire which is about 4 miles from Ashley and about 9 or 10 miles from Market Drayton. This would fit in much better with the circumstances you have outlined. You can find detailed mapping online at http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=standon,+staffordshire&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=42.224734,75.234375&ie=UTF8&z=13&iwloc=addr but if that doesn't work try this short cut to the same place http://tinyurl.com/3npyhc When you look at the map Ashley and Market Drayton are west of Standon. The National Archives at Kew in London produce a lot of free Research Guides, some of which are about Assizes, see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1 Mike Shropshire, UK ______________________________________________________ Greg Bugden wrote: > Hello Graham > Thanks for the welcome and reply. The trial was held at the Staffordshire Assizes. So the Stanton you mentioned in Staffordshire could be a likely candidate for the Blagg residence. But if the crime had been committed in Shropshire then I guess the trial would have been held in that county, unless all assizes in the region were held at Stafford. Do you know? > > However, the article tracks the movements of the prisoner before his capture: he went to a draper in "Drayton" (could that be Market Drayton??) and to a woman in "Ashley" (though the type is not very legible, could be "Astly"). These must have been nearby villages, within walking distance of Stanton. Additionally the money stolen was in notes from the Market Drayton Bank. > > As for his birth in Market Drayton, The IGI lists only one JOHN BATES born in Shropshire (his native place according to the Convict Indent) in the year 1807 (he was 18 at the time of the trial, hence this date), Market Drayton. > Cheers > Greg > > REMEMBER - The question you are asking may have already been answered. > Threaded Archives at - > http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/ENG-SHROPSHIRE-PLUS/Archives > > Searchable Archives at - > http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/ENG-SHROPSHIRE-PLUS/ > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > ------------------------------ To contact the ENG-SHROPSHIRE-PLUS list administrator, send an email to [email protected] To post a message to the ENG-SHROPSHIRE-PLUS mailing list, send an email to [email protected] __________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word "unsubscribe" without the quotes in the subject and the body of the email with no additional text. 1. [ENG-SHROP] JOHN POUNTNEY WHO MARRIED BEATRICE SELINA DAVIES IN CHURCH STRETTON 1928
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: valpage32 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sal.general/6584/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hiya, I've finally found my mother's parents registration of marriage in 1928 tonight via this website. Their names were John Pountney and Beatrice Selina Davies, they married in Church Stretton, Shropshire, England. John and Beatrice had 9 children together. Jack/John Pountney, Dennis Pountney, Alfred Pountney, Brian Pountney, Dave Pountney, Gladys Pountney (married Peter Downward), Joan Pountney (can't remember her married name), Shirley Pountney (married William Henry Tracey), Mary Pountney (Mary is my mum!, and she married John Page my dad!!!). I'm trying to find John Pountney's family in the 1800's, and maybe even earlier, just like i'm trying to find the Davies connections, (that already have expanded to other surnames and places in England).... and possibly the 1900's. I have hearsay and this and that, but no definate dates, names, places. It's like a mystery within a mystery!. Did John Pountney's family originate in Church Stretton for example. I mean why get married there?. I guess i suppose it's another trip to the library archives in Shrewsbury!. It seems strange, that by 1930 Beatrice Davies had married John Pountney, and they lived at 2 Eyton Road, Baschurch, Near Shrewsbury in Shropshire. And yet, they married in Church Stretton in 1928, just a few months before their son Jack/John Pountney was born!..... Such a mystery, that i'm determined to solve somehow!!!. Best wishes to all, Val in Shropshire Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
