Hello Wendy, You can find the Historical Directories online free here: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ You can start looking for the 11 directories for Shropshire by clicking on Shropshire on the map on this Web page: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbylocation.asp I have been able to find family information by browsing the relevant areas. Would someone be willing to explain the best techniques they've found for using the search function? Thank you. Barbara Bradley Petura Message Board Post: Hello Linda, Thank you very much for the information. I'm not sure where to find the Historical Directories. I do have copies of George's military records retrieved by a very helpful Ancestry.co.uk member in London. I know he enlisted in Manchester in 1829. I believe him to be educated as he signed (in very nice penmanship) the enlistment papers. As far as trades go, most of the Griffiths' I've come across were general labourers. Let me know how I can contact you. Wendy

Qtr 1838, Salford Dist. lists? Perhaps Harriet was a second wife or something? I did see another George and Sarah couple but may have been someone else... Did you find any HOOKER family near the places that Harriet/Harriett gave as a birth place by reviewing the 1841 census of the location? I wonder if her death record would give closest living relative and/or some other information? I had a devil of the time finding my Grandmother's father's mother [eg. grandma's grandmother] because she was called LOCKWOOD and HURST at various times or on other documents. I found out this woman had been "adopted" by a HURST who married her mother who had several other children previously. I could not find that this HURST family had any other children but have followed up on the other children who were the great-grandma's siblings in 1841 and 1851. I wonder if your George actually had a skill by birth........he may have labored before his entry into the service at age of 23 in 1829.........possible links by trade research might help some by using the female's surname of HOOKER. I found it interesting that there was a GRIFFITH BUILDING in Croydon and Manchester pages........ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have the birth records for most of the children and they list George Edward Griffiths and Harriett Griffiths (nee Hooker) as parents. All the children were born in Croydon. What I have found out is that George Edward (1838) was in the army (found him in Wales in 1861) and didn't marry until into his 40's. I cannot find anything on the females. My ancestor is William John and I have all his records. Wendy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The GRIFFITH/GRIFFITHS name are quite hard to work. If the subject was military and died with a pension there should be some records in the Croydon area and the Barracks history. There may even have been a marriage in the same locale. We have seen no children's list for this couple called Harriet/Harriett other than this posting with you census attachment. It would be worth the time for the researcher to follow up on the children in this list as per birth locales and even invest in one copy or try for some other researchers of the children in this list. A copy of any of these children's births should give the name of the father and mother's surname if the practice was completed. Or even a marriage for any one of these children. I am researching this family. Ellen HEATH was the `wife` of John CHANT but the marriage record has not been found after much searching. Their first child George CHANT was born 1879 in Hull, Yks. Because I couldn`t find the marriage record I looked for Ellen`s birth so that a certificate could be bought. Ellen died 1916 in Doncaster, Yks. aged 66years on Death Cert. so birth about 1850. Census returns give her age as - 1901 aged 42yrs. born Shrewsbury (Living Doncaster) so born about 1859. 1891 aged 36yrs. born Hull, Yks.(Living Knottingly Yks.) so birth about 1855. 1881 aged 29yrs. born Shrewsbury, Shropshire(Living Hull) so birth about 1852. There is an Ellen HEATH born 1847 Sept Quarter on National Index and also an Ellen HEATH on 1851 census daughter of Joseph and Charlotte HEATH but I am reluctant to accept this because of the varying dates on census. In 1882 Ellen named a daughter Charlotte. I welcome any ideas. Thank you, Maureen.

A common respectful entry for a military officer spelled correct or not! I also find it interesting that my Grandmother was born in Derby, Lancashire in 1899, her mother in Shropshire, Whitchurch in 1868, residences listed as Derbyshire, Lancashire, Kent, etc.........the area is very close in at times when needs for moving into housing and the occupation changes. My grandmother's father was from a family involved in gunpowder manufacturing and were in Kent, Wiltshire, etc for the births of many children. The powder manufacturing was linked to the cotton mills in the later years. The arsenils may be a locale of interest as your George was involved in the military, also. This 1841 census has no spouse as it is in the Barracks and the entire list is soldiers. I think you will not find too many census with Harriet/Harriett in his household! Soldiers came and went from homes. Check it out. I enteres only George Griffith with no "s" on the end and born plus/minus 5 year of 1806; no birth locale and no exact spelling. It was on page 11. George Edward and Harriett had five children that I could find... George Edward (1838) (also in the service) William John (1840) Mary C (1843) Harriet (1845) John James (1848) Harriett Hooker died in Croydon in 1855. His marriage to Mary Beach was in 1860. I did find her residing at the Croydon Barracks in 1841 with George Edward and William John. Wendy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. One side has some extensions to the census districts for Cheshire or Chester in history. I found one of my Shropshire/Salop WOOLLEY ladies there in one census when she was solidly in Shropshire for the balance of all findings in census. She was a "publican" at the time. In the 1841 census there is a George Griffiths in Cheshire born in 1806. Unfortunately this George is a shoemaker and is 35 [about the right age]. and the eldest female is named Sarah who is 40. What is the name of the child of George and Harriet? Perhaps if you post this info you might "hit on a link" for Harriet......... The most telling item in your posting is that George enrolled in 1829 so he was age 23 then. He likely was short of prospects or wanted adventure.....one never can tell why men do things but the times may also have dictated the need........ seeing that he was "now in Manchester" you might try some older directories and see what went on in that area in 1931 and also go to the web and read about this group of Grenadiers in the Foot Guards and try to follow their path of useage. It might lead you to his enlistmant papers. Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have read all your posts and responses re. this subject. I wonder if you might try the Historical Directory web pages for some previous locations for your family of GRIFFIHS. There are several by trades and such and they go from circa 1830's thru 1900's in most all the county areas as the counties were developed and boundries shifted. You might work them backward from the most known and use key words, etc. Your George may have had a trade as well as being military. If you can locate his marriage you will get the trade or occupation of his father if it is like the copies I have.....he may have married within the free BMD marriage dates and the extract is in question due to fade, spelling error, etc. That census may be the key to finding something. You might see if there is a way to get military records of entry. Use the live search engines, the government sites, etc that you can find free for use. I have several Ellesmere and Wiitchurch area films circa the 1700's thru 1900 and when I can get back to reading I might be able to find more. I need, however, to have you contact me private to supply better background. Regards, Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
