The family was intact through 1901 census so you might find a bit more about George and Elizabeth by death certs....... Perhaps you are already in possession of these; I was wondering if George was married under another surname.......and Elizabeth also; perhaps a child born previous to wedlock might have lead to such a thing. She married Alfred Clayton in Preston Lancashire England December 1911. She was a millner for the swanky folk back in the day. She immigrated to Canada aboard the Duchess of York August 22nd 1930 with her son George (my grandfather). I have found that ancestry makes alot of transcript errors as they have her mother named as a "Huskin" and her immigration records show her as being 44 in 1930 which would make her birth year around 1886 ancestry has it listed as 1883. Anyways what I am trying to find is information on the 1901 census of England. I hope that someone can help me out in this regard. 1. [ENG-SHROP] Married - Somewhere ~1825 (LEWIS, TROUGHTON)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, Just a reminder that I have not been able to find out where my ancestors married. Richard LEWIS was from Shropshire and Elizabeth TROUGHTON was from Cheshire, but they seem to have had all 6 children in Lancashire (Liverpool). Did they meet and marry there? Or, did they meet in Cheshire and marry there? Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) FYI: This is part of my posting from last summer: This is part of one of my postings on the LEWIS List from a few months ago: What someone told me is that they had found my LEWIS ancestors in the 1841 census for Liverpool, England -- under the name, LOWIS. The censis record showed that Richard and Elizabeth LEWIS had 2 daughters that I didn't know about. I only knew about the 4 sons mentioned in the 1851 census. For the moment, I will just summarize what I know about this family: Richard LEWIS was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, in ~1803, and he was a tailor (unknown parents; there are possibilities) Elizabeth TROUGHTON was born in Heswall, Cheshire, England, in ~1806 They might have married in 1825 or 1826 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. They had a daughter, Ann LEWIS ~1827 in Liverpool They had a daughter, Sarah LEWIS ~1828 in Liverpool They had a son, William LEWIS in 1832 in Liverpool They had a son, John LEWIS in 1836 in Liverpool They had a son, Charles LEWIS in 1841 in Liverpool (prob. died young) They had a son, Henry LEWIS in 1843 in Liverpool They had a son, Richard LEWIS in 1848 in Liverpool Since the daughters are not mentioned in the 1851 census, they had probably married by then. (I don't know why my copy/pasting shows up in larger text.) (My ancestor is John LEWIS who married Isabella BURROWS in Liverpool. They seem to have had only one child, a son, John "Stanley" LEWIS, who grew up to become my great-grandfather.) (Stanley became a "Child Migrant" and was shipped to Nova Scotia. He married another Child Migrant there, and then came down to Massachusetts to raise their 13 children.)

    3. Earlier one will be Banns....often they were entered in the Marriage register eapecially if a Banns register was not maintained. As banns were read in the parish of residence of both groom & bride there are a lot of "double" entries for this. Clue is usually if the two dates are within 3 weeks of each other (Banns were read thrice on consecutive Sundays) -------- Original Message -------- > Dear All > > I've a similar issue, as according to the IGI my gx5 grandparents seem to > have married twice on successive weeks in two separate parishes, details as > below: > > IGI Batch: M008661 > Marriages: JOHN HAY Male > Spouse: WINIFRED PARSONS > Marriage: 21 JAN 1759 Stanton Lacy, Shropshire, England > > IGI Batch: M016141 > Marriages: JOHN HAY Male > Spouse: WINIFRED PARSONS Family > Marriage: 14 FEB 1759 Burford > > Apparently married at both Stanton Lacy 21 Jan 1759 AND Burford 14 Feb 1759. > > > Could the earlier entry for Stanton Lacy relate to banns? > > I recognise that I need to check to the registers in printed form or on > microfiche at the Shropshire Archives, when I can next visit. > > However would be interested in anyone's thoughts on this. > > Best wishes > > Martin Hughes > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: 11 November 2008 23:46 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [ENG-SHROP] Married in two churches on the same date? > > I was surprised to see a marriage appear in two different > churches/parishes. > > >From the Kinnerley parish register, p.58 of the printed version: > > 29 June 1701, Mr. John Payne, of Argoed, and Eliz: Jones, of Llansanfried > (sic). > > >From the St. Martin parish register, p. 134 of the printed version: > > 29 June 1701, Mr. John Payne of the Argot and Mrs. Elizabeth Jones of loer > (sic) Ridge. > > Any ideas to explain this? 3. 2. Michael J Hulme
    3. Hello Barbara and Linda When using the Historical Directories web site http://www.historicaldirectories.org I prefer to use the Keyword option from the front page. Click on the 'Find by Keywords' button then at the next screen you can select Shropshire (or elsewhere) in the top drop down list. I would then just enter your own Keyword(s) in the appropriate box, leaving Decade and Key Name as 'All'. Then just click the 'Find Directories' button and see what comes up. You can even search for John Jones and Jones, John by using the 'Within Operator' in the form John w/2 Jones where you are asking the system to find Jones and John within two words of each other because you never know which way round they are going to be written. See the Technical FAQ's http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/howto/howto7.asp#detailed for more information. When the list of Directories comes up on screen click on the word 'Directory' alongside whichever one(s) interest you and then I usually click on the 'Next Hit' button to go from one hit to the next. 1. Re: [ENG-SHROP] ENG-SHROPSHIRE-PLUS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 340
    2. John Sands
    3. Hello Linda I see that you have films, and I wondered if I could ask you a favour - do you do look-ups, please? For more than 30 years I have been looking for a baptism for my gggggrandfather John SANDS. He was married at Ellesmere on 6 June 1730. I have a copy of his marriage licence in which his bride's surname is WARD but when I looked on a film many years ago it appears in the register as either HEWARD or HOWARD (the second letter is indistinct). Both are described as "of Whitchurch". John was described as a Malster. He was buried at Prees 26 July 1798 "age 92". The IGI shows 8 baptisms for children of John SANDS at Whitchurch 1708 - 1725 but when I saw the originals there is one missed off the IGI, "5 July 1703 Martha, bastard daughter of John SANDS and Mary LEA of Whitchurch". My John would fit in the gap. However I can't find a marriage for John senior. Perhaps if I found one it would lead to the baptism. I suspect that this John might be the John, son of John SANDES, baptised at Ellesmere 16 July 1681. My hypothesis which I have so far been unsuccessful in either proving or disproving is that John born c 1706 is the grandson of John who had 13 children baptised at Ellesmere 1680 - 1698. A deed dated 24 June 1700 refers to "a burgage or dwelling house called the sign of the Red Lyon, Elismer, late in tenure of William SWANWICKE and John SANDS" I believe that he is the John SANDS buried at Ellesmere 6 May 1726. His widow Judith was buried there 2 January 1738 so possibly John born c 1706 was living with his grandmother, and possibly involved in the family business. I have a copy of a settlement examination showing that he moved to Prees in 1737 and I know from other sources that he was involved in the licensed trade there. If you are able to look at your films for the relevant dates I should be most grateful. I recall that the quality of the Ellesmere ones is poor, and a fresh eye might pick up something that I missed. Please contact me off list if you need further information.
