Hi Joyce The GRO is not much help with searching. You need the idex numbers. Their number 0845 603 7788 and your interantal access code. I have found that local registry offices are more helpful but don't use the GRO Index Number. Shropshire is on 0345 675 9016 or regisrars@shropshire.gov.uk Good luck Jim Hill -----Original Message----- From: eng-shropshire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-shropshire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of joyce crete Sent: Wednesday, 3 March 2010 1:46 PM To: eng-shropshire-plus@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-SHROP] looking for phone number for GRO certificates Hi Mike - Is there a phone number to call to order GRO certificates? Hi! When I call from Canada I always have to add 01144 and drop the first number which is usually a 0. Hi Mike This has come up on a number of sites. The cost whilst a big rise is still low compared to other countries/states. Victoria charges about 11 pounds but it can ve downloaded on line. Queensland charges about 23 punds and is only available by mail. It would seem that the GRO needs to improve the index and give greater access to online certificates instead of the current lottery. Must send off before the end of March Jim Hill - Melbourne -----Original Message----- From: eng-shropshire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-shropshire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Michael J Hulme Sent: Tuesday, 2 March 2010 6:57 PM To: Eng-Shropshire-Plus@Rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-SHROP] Cost of Certificates increasing Hello Everyone It has just been announced that the cost of Certificates will increase to GBP 9.25 from 6th April 2010. Oh dear, might have to live on bread and water if this keeps up. Anyway, to be expected. Everything in the world is going up, never find many things coming down except some politicians as they make bumbles in their private life and forget that the media is always lurking in the background. Things in the UK are no doubt rather frozen at the moment due to cold, but Spring is around the corner, so smile, break out and enjoy. Cheers Graham Oz Looking forward to a pleasant autumn, or fall as the yanks call it.
£9 from the local register office I understand Mike in Droitwich Michael J Hulme wrote: > Hello Everyone > > It has just been announced that the cost of Certificates will increase > to GBP 9.25 from 6th April 2010. > > See http://www.ips.gov.uk/cps/rde/xchg/ips_live/hs.xsl/1569.htm for the > full details. > > Mike >

Hi all I know things have been slow of late, but I seem not to have received any messages from 12 Feb, whereas the Archives show messages coming through to the list up to the 20th. How come I haven not received any of them? Oh well, never mind, just a little glitch as such. I shall be pleased if this message gets back to me, that's all that matters. So, this is a check, and if it comes back to me, fine. Now, all go back to sleep and get some rest. Cheers Graham
Hi Graham, I had the same problems, at one time. It turned out my mail programme was not checking for and downloading emails-I gave it a couple of kicks and it has started to perform again ;-) Yes, the list is "slow". I wonder if it's due to the weather in UK (been cold, rainy, snowy for so long now we are all a tad fed up) and also that the UK FHF season has started with fairs last weekend in CHS & OXF. This weekend is WDYTYA are Olympia and so on. In the southern hemisphere I imagine people are enjoying their summer and must have just had the "return to school" for the start of a new academic year which makes them extra busy. It would be really nice, if people had the time to post the occasional message about their research-some successes, some frustrations etc. Sherry Landa Oxford, UK > I know things have been slow of late, but I seem not to have received > any messages from 12 Feb, whereas the Archives show messages coming > through to the list up to the 20th. Thanks Sherry but James died in 1909 and Mary in 1905 so the 1911 Census won't help. I too have followed this family between STS, SAL and WRY but have not been able to find a marriage. Best wishes David ------------------------- Date: Wed, 17 Feb 2010 11:00:33 +0200 From: Sherry with Sky <SherryELanda@sky.com> Subject: Re: [ENG-SHROP] THACKER Marriage To: eng-shropshire-plus@rootsweb.com Message-ID: I was thinking that if you can find James & Mary in 1911 census it would say how long they were married which should narrow the marriage timeframe down a bit. That said, I couldn't find them! Mary may have died in the June qtr of 1905 and James in March qtr 1909 (reg Wellington). From the other censuses I can see a triangle of movement between STS, SAL & WRY. Then in 1911 I appear to have found sons back in WRY (in Doncaster). As the first for or five children were all born in YKS it is definitely YKS and not Shelfield (but good thinking). BTW The IGI suggests the marriage took place in about 1865 in Shifnal, but then it is a patron entry which is probably just a best guess based on the dates of children's births and Mary's home parish. When I mentioned villages, district, etc. in my previous email, the following may give you some better idea. Ellesmere parish has lots of surrounding hamlets, etc. If the person being buried is not from the town, the place of residence will usually be one of the hamlets, e.g. Coptiviney, Criftins, Trench, Lyniel, Colemere, Newton, Haughton, Hardwick, Tetchill Moor, Welsh Frankton, etc. and some of these are indeed outlying villages. Very useful in helping to pin families down. Cheers Graham
