Attention all newcomers! I have noticed that there are many newcomers who do not know exactly how the Yorkshire Surnames List works. This week I received several requests for lookups or information on families or individuals. Just to clarify how this database works: The YKS Surnames List is a free, voluntary database that is created by people interested in Yorkshire genealogy. There is no provision for posting any type of query. The YKS Surname List is simply a database of surnames that have been submitted by researchers, in the hopes that other people interested in the same surnames might contact them and thus help in developing their family trees. Unless by some lucky chance you are researching one of my surnames, all of the almost 22,000 names submitted belong to other people. Queries and requests for lookups should be directed to one of the several genealogy lists for Yorkshire, where you can post all the details that might trigger a fellow researcher's interest. To see who else may have posted a surname on the YKS List, please go directly to the YKS Surname List home page, at the URL given below with my signature. You will arrive at the Index Page. Click on the group of letters that should contain the surname that you are interested in. You will be taken to a sub-index page. Use your Find tool to look for your surname. If you find an entry which interests you, click on EMAIL, next to the submitter's name, and you will get a pop-up that you can use to contact that person directly. The reason we do not give a submitter's email on the index is to protect submitters from email harvesters. If anyone wishes to submit his/her surname(s) to the YKS Surnames List database, they should read all the instructions for submissions that are given on the YKS List Home Page. Do note that some ISPs do not accept the form we provide; in that case, the surname details will have to be sent to me for manual submission. Please read those instructions very carefully also.
