Any serious web crawler could go to the YKS Surnames List Home Page and click on each and every «EMAIL» and collect all the addresses there. I don't like publishing email addresses, but it is equally irresponsible for people to sign up and enter names in a database and then ignore changes so that other researchers are continuously inconvenienced by bouncing emails. It is not as if I didn't repeatedly tell people what to do when they change emails. If you had to delete dozens of entries at a time because of irresponsible submitters, you would probably understand. Besides, all any harvester has to do is go to the archives for any one of the lists on rootsweb and pick out the emails of people who post messages. I hate spam as much as most people, but I really think that one can go overboard with concern. A good spam filter does wonders. If those e-mail addresses are dead anyway how is it going to hurt if they're harvested? Surely the whole point of them being listed was that any mail sent to them is bouncing? Just a thought!
