Although it is called a workhouse, it appears to be more of an orphanage. Any information would be appreciated.Regards, >Christina >San Jose > >Protected by NORTON anti-virus > Christina What sort of date do you need records for? Unfortunately, the survival of poor law records for Sheffield is not good (due to the Luftwaffe) but http://www.workhouses.co.uk is usually worth a look. It was the responsibility of the Poor Law Union to look after many children - orphans or those whose families were unable to look after them. They might have a separate orphanage building or be included as part of the workhouse. They were supposed to receive a basic education and indeed, many unions employed a schoolmaster. However, the quality of the education was doubtless very poor. They were often apprenticed out as soon as possible, so that they would no longer be a drain on the public purse. Regards Steve
