Hello Elaine and others. This is the transcription of the notice that was pinned on the door of Eckington Parish Church in January 1815. Sabbath Day Whereas it has been represented to us, by several shopkeepers of this Parish that they are prevented from a due & reverent observance of the Sabbath-day, by persons resorting to their shops on that day we hereby give Notice that we are determined to the utmost of our power to suppress a practice both illegal & immoral, and to detect and punish all persons who keep their shops open on Sundays, by enforcing the penalty which the law enjoins. And we also strongly recommend to all masters to pay their work-people early on Saturday ( or some other evening ), so as to prevent the usual pretence for resorting to shops on the Sunday morning ; namely, That they receive their wages late on Saturday evening, or ( shame to say ) on Sunday morning.
