Hi Elaine, Thank you so much for your extra sleuthing. The thought of Sack or Jack occurred to us. Fortunately this was cleared up because they were married in St. Philip & Jacob parish. This made it possible to compare the handwriting of the of Sack or Jack. No doubt, at this time in his life he went by Sack and in later years he went by John. In addition to Hanniff we found the last name indexed as Haunf, Henriff, Horeniff, Harruff, and that was just in England. In America I've seen the two "nn" indexed as an "m". The one thing that all of these have in common however, is that they start with an "H" and end with an "F". I still haven't found them on them on the 1841 or 1851 census so it is possible that there could be "fs" or "ss". Anything is possible with this family. In fact, according to the oral history of the family, the name was changed when the family left India, and Sack's marriage record says that his father's name was "Sack Jean". I'm hoping as more family's have their DNA tested that we will be able to figure out if we are Hanniff's or Jean's. One more piece of information. Records in England and America both state that Sack/John was born in Calcutta, East India Island in 1812. Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to organize my thoughts on this Hanniff family. Ken
