    3. Hello List, Just thought I would share my small misfortune with you all just to reinforce how important it is to check every possible source available before assuming that a name you come across is a member your family, and after six years of family history research how I should have known better. I've today received the marriage certificate for my 2nd G.Grandfather/Grandmother, Richard JENKINSON & Harriet HORSFIELD, they married on 6th August 1883 at St. Nicholas' Church, High Bradfield. I've had the GRO ref for this certificate for at least three years now but never bothered to send for it until last week. After reading the certificate and seeing the first name of Richard's father I'm now wishing I had sent for it three years ago, as this certificate has put an enormous spanner in my JENKINSON family tree as I've been researching the wrong JENKINSON family for all of this time. I had previously found Richard & Harriet JENKINSON living at Wadsley on the 1891 & 1901 Census' but when I came to search the 1881 Census the only Richard JENKINSON I could find was a Richard JENKINSON aged 15 (Coal Miner) and living at Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham with his siblings and parents Wellard & Leah JENKINSON, Wellard was also a Coal Miner. I knew from the 1891 & 1901 Census records that my Richard was born c1862 (Stannington, Bradfield) and was a Coal Miner/Hewer so when I saw the 1881 information above (and couldn't find another Richard born around the same time who was a Coal Miner) I decided that possibly the age of the Thorpe Hesley Richard could be wrong as this would make this Richard born c1866. With the help of others that I contacted I managed to get back down this JENKINSON family line to c1650 and now this is all in vain, sob, sob. From the marriage certificate I now know that my Richard's father was called Michael JENKINSON, occupation: Stonecutter. I have this evening been searching Ancestry.Co.UK and cannot find my Richard or his father Michael on either the 1871 or 1881 Census records which is a complete mystery to me as I know I should be able to find Richard and possibly Michael (assuming he hadn't died before either of these census years). Would it be possible for SKS who has access to the 1861 Census to see if they could find my 3rd G.Grandfather, Michael JENKINSON please? Obviously, because I don't have any census information to go on I can't give any indication as to his age or birth year, or even a place of birth, I only have his name and occupation (Stonecutter). I have just found a birth reference for what I believe will be my Richard (March Qtr. 1862 - Wortley Vol: 9c, Page: 193) and I'm sending for that from the GRO this evening. Hopefully this will be the correct Richard and show his father as Michael. Any help from the 1861 or earlier census records (or suggestions on how to proceed from here) would be greatly appreciated.
