Hello List, Can I just begin by saying a huge thank-you to all that have replied to my JENKINSON / JINKINSON / TINKINSON query this evening with special thanks to Karen Lightowler and Tracey (in Leicestershire) who I think I can safely say (95% certain) have put me on the right track to finding this elusive family. Tracey kindly provided me with (from the 1881 Census) Richard TINKINSON, aged: 18, a Trammer Coal Miner, born: Stannington and living with grandparents John & Ruth MARSHALL at Hunshelf/Deepcar. I have now found this John & Ruth MARSHALL in the 1841, 1851 and 1871 Census records and believe that my Michael JENKINSON (or whatever other surname variant he uses) may have married one of John & Ruth MARSHALL's daughters, possibly their daughter Mary (b: c1842) which would make her approx 20 years of age when Richard was born in 1862. From the info that Karen gave I now have Michael JINKINSON, age 25, Mine Labourer (living as a lodger) with a Stonemason in the 1861 Census. It would appear that Michael had a change of career after living with John COULDWELL and took up the trade as a Stonemason/Cutter, his son Richard later taking up his father's original career as Miner. I think I now have to search for a marriage of a Michael JINK-JENK or TINKINSON to a MARSHALL female c1861/2 which will hopefully get me going again. I have sent for the birth certificate for Richard JENKINSON born March Qtr. 1862 so hopefully this will give me the correct parents names. With regard to Elaine's message below, the marriage certificate is definitely JENKINSON, both Richard and Michael and the 1891 & 1901 Census records are all down as JENKINSON. Richard's daughter Mary Ellen was my G.Grandmother and her name is always listed as JENKINSON in every document I have ever seen including her marriage certificate to my G.Grandfather, William CRAWSHAW at Wadsley in 1906. Another pointer (although not cast in stone) that Michael's wife may have been a MARSHALL is that Richard & Harriet JENKINSON named their first daughter Ruth and their second daughter Mary (my G.Grandmother), did Richard name them for his grandmother Ruth and mother Mary?..............I'll have to wait for the certificate to see. Thanks to all once again.....................the best list on Rootsweb has come up trumps again.
