    1. Re: [SHEFF] GRANDMOTHER; CAROLINE LYDIA SCOTT BUT KNOWN AS CAROLINE LYDIA PAISLEY IN 1919

    3. hello Elizabeth, This may complicate matters !... The 1919-20 White's Directory for Sheffield has the following entry: 583 Penistone Rd ARCHER Mrs Caroline L midwife There are no PAISLEYs or PISLEYs in this directory. There are some PASLEYs including: William Hy PASLEY 79 Countess Road engraver This is near St Mary's Church, Bramall Lane - a long way from Penistone Rd. The usefullness of the electoral registers may be limited for the following reasons: No electoral registers were compiled in Sheffield between the volumes for 1914/15 and 1920. The right to vote was subject to a property qualification (which could include the rented property as well as ownership) so that there was only one vote per household. Women only appear where they are heads of household. Caroline could appear if she was living on her own for part of this period, but it won't be possible to link her with William this way (unless, for example, they were living in adjacent properties !). It would be possible to check the address in Penistone Road in the electoral rolls for the years 1907-1915 and 1920. If no relevant names are found then some other information may be needed to locate at least William, because there is no name index. Other directories may help. A couple of things I am not clear about... Is SCOTT her maiden name or her married name ? (was she in fact married to your grandfather?). Similarly, is MACE the married name of her sister ? You say she died in the Union Infirmary. Was that Sheffield Union or Ecclesall Union ? (the city was covered by two unions). Have you looked for a possible newspaper report of the inquest?
