Hello all, I have a Charles Cavill, died Oct-Dec 1881 aged 72 at Eccleshall Bierlow, I would like to know whether he left a will, he was listed as an annuitant for the last few censuses before he died and in his younger life was a 'gentleman farmer' so it has been suggested that he may have had some land or an investment to leave to someone... I just don't have a clue how I would find out - any suggestions? Thanks Amanda Cavell Liverpool
Greetings Could this be your man? National Probate Calendar CHARLES CAVELL [sic] Personal Estate under £2,355 10s 8d 3 March 1882 The will of Charles Cavell the elder late of 10 Slinn St Walkley in the parish of Sheffield on the county of York Yeoman who died 11 Dec 1881 at 10 Slinn St was proved at WAKEFIELD by Francis Sutton of Revell Grange near Stannington in the parish of Ecclesfield in the said county Esquire and Benjamin Smith of Montague house, Crookesmoor Road in the parish of Sheffield steel manufacturer the Executors. All the above raises questions and gives some answers:- A copy of the will is held at Wakefield Yeoman says he was a landholder usually of smaller areas. Are Sutton and Smith son in laws or business associates or both. Is Revell Grange where the land lies? Do you have him at 10 Slinn St in the 1881 census. He is the "elder" so where is the younger Charles and why isn't he an executor? Lots to be going on with there! Another entry may also be of interest. THOMAS CAVILL [sic] personal estate under £1,500 10 January 1881 The will of Thomas Cavill late of 127 Cemetery Road Sheffield in the county of York Engineer who died 7 Nov 1880 at 127 Cemetery Road was proved at WAKEFIELD by Sarah Cavill of 127 Cemetery Road Widow the relict the sole Executrix. Could be a relation. I found more Cavells than Cavills so it seems you may need to look under both spellings. I always have to check under Elms as well as Elmes - the one that really gave me trouble was a spelling of Elemes.
