hello Harry, The current official spelling is 'Bramall' Lane and that seems to have been used from at least 1834, judging by the addresses in directories transcribed (in part) at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Sheffield/index.html . Variants with an 'h' look strange to me! Interestingly, there is no sign of this road under any spelling in the directories listed there for 1787, 1822 and 1829. The 1851 OS also spells it Bramall. Of course sufficient and authorative evidence for this spelling can be found throughout the following site: http://www.sufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Home/0,,10418,00.html Hugh (Sheffield) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harry Dodsworth" <af877@freenet.carleton.ca> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 25, 2005 9:15 PM Subject: [SHEFF] Bramhall Lane or Brammall Lane? > Bramhall Lane is one of the best known streets in Sheffield. > However in the old directories, it seems to be spelt Brammall Lane. > I have a birth and death certificate from the 1840s and again > Brammall is the spelling - I would expect the registrar to be able > to spell correctly. > > Did the spelling change and, if so, when and why? > > A Google search lists: > Bramhall 1190; Brammall 447; Bramall 214; Bramhal 2 > Of course many of the references were written by football fans :-) > > > -- > Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca > ----------------------------------------------------------------
