Hello Everyone Strange request here .... but hope someone can help. Talking to my Mum as much as possible about her early life and getting all the details down. Don't know how good her memory is though as she's never mentioned this before. Her family used to live near the Wicker Arches but were too frightened to stay because of a murder in the area and moved away. She can't remember the street name or the date but it was before she first started school. They moved to the Manor and she started school either 1927 or 1928 - that's if children started at 4 or 5 then. I've used search engines to look for it but had no joy so far. Has anyone any ideas? Or heard anything about it? Or were murders in those days more of an every day occurrence? hello Sue, I'm wondering whether this could be related to the Sheffield Gang Wars. I haven't read JP Bean's book (called The Sheffield Gang Wars !) but I have just found the following thread from SheffieldForum which gives you an idea of what it was like to live in that part of town in the 1920's http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread/t-659.html According to the thread, a gang member was murdered on Princess St on Cup Final Day 1925. This is not far from the Wicker, and the timing fits the dates you give. Perhaps it was the whole atmosphere of danger on the streets that led to your mother's family leaving.
