My family have always been convinced that my father, Reginald John BAILEY (b1914) of Carbrook, (Brightside Bierlow), had a relative on Dunlop St, around 1920 -30 or so, who had a business with horses and carts. Whether he was a carter or farrier or even a coalman I do not know. Neither do I have a name. I know many listers have a huge variety of various books listing businesses but do any show this family? If anyone can tell me I would be very grateful. Thank you, Mike Bailey Sawtry Cambs
hello Mike, looking at Dunlop St in White's 1919-20 trade directory..... First, there is a John BAILEY cowkeeper at 310. Then looking for likely occupations: 175 HARRISON Fred cart owner 211 WARD Mrs Fanny coal dealer 243 NEWTON Geo Chas coal dealer Court 14 NADIN Humphrey carter 352 CUTHBERT Jsph carting contctr There are also 2 'fettlers' called THORPE. This could have a horse-related meaning I think, but here it is more likely that they work in the metal trades, knocking the rough edges off something.
